Reviewing Ancient Greece Ancient Greece is the birthplace of Western Civilization The Four Core Values of Western Civilization are… – Rights: power for normal people (ex. Equality), rules that leaders must follow – Reason: using brain to solve problems. Using intelligence to find out what’s right – Individualism: having your own ideas, valuing each person equally, each individual has freedom, each person is important – Democracy: people choose what is going to happen to the country, government ruled by the people, everyone gets a vote What are some examples of ancient Greece supporting AND going against these values? BE SPECIFIC!

Ancient Greece Supporting “Western” Values In Athens, poor people given money to vote shows democracy and rights In Sparta women are free and go to work/sports -> individualism, also rights In Athens, equal justice for people rights, treating people equal in democracy Opposing “Western” Values Women in Athens can’t vote and only do indoor work going against rights Lots of slaves: can’t vote in Athens, lots of them killed in Sparta rights, individualism because slaves have NO value, reason
