APWH Essay Rubrics

Comparison Essay THESIS, THESIS, THESIS! Provide BRIEF background info Include both similarities AND differences in your thesis (How are they alike? How are they different?) Provide a roadmap of what you’re going to talk about in the rest of your essay (these can become your topic sentences)

Comparison Essay Address ALL parts of the question as evenly and thoroughly as possible Ex: Compare and contrast the political, economic, and cultural impact of Islam on India and Africa during the Postclassical period between 600 – 1450.

Comparison Essay Substantiate your thesis with appropriate historical evidence: EXAMPLES, EXAMPLES, EXAMPLES! When in doubt, just write as much as you know!

Comparison Essay Make AT LEAST TWO relevant and direct comparisons between or among societies. Kind of like your thesis, but with specific information. (Your thesis can NOT count as one of these two)

Comparison Essay Analyze reasons for the similarities and differences identified in the direct comparisons between or among societies. EXPLAIN, EXPLAIN, EXPLAIN!! Tell the reader WHY these events were important and what the IMPACT was on the region/world.

Comparison Essay Expanded Core: –Clear, analytical, comprehensive thesis –Ample historical evidence to substantiate thesis –Ability to relate comparisons consistently to larger global context and/or specific regional dynamics –Consistent direct comparisons between/among societies

DBQ Essay EASIEST essay to get a high score! The answer is there, you just need to put the info together ANALYZE docs first, then write your essay

DBQ Step 1: Read docs, paying careful attention to the sources Use the model to quickly figure out: –Basic characteristics (basic meaning/summary) –Groupings (based on similar characteristics) –Evidence (underline info that you can use to help support your thesis) –POV (think SOAPStone – why does THIS person have THIS to say at THIS point in history? How would his/her POV be different from someone else in the same time/place?)

DBQ THESIS, THESIS, THESIS! Use your thesis as a general statement to introduce your groupings. Use SPRITE categories if you’re having trouble with groupings.

DBQ Discuss the BASIC MEANING of each of the documents –The rubric allows you to misinterpret one of the documents and still get the point, but you MUST address EVERY doc

DBQ Support your thesis with appropriate evidence from all (or all but one) of the docs IN YOUR OWN WORDS, use information from the docs to EXPLAIN the why that event was important

DBQ GROUP your docs in 2 or 3 ways, depending on the question Make sure you have your two or three solid groupings, but if you have time, include more if you can (for expanded core points) Can be SPRITE categories, regions, or based on characteristics of the sources…as long as it is accurate, and makes sense you can get this point.

DBQ Analyze POV in as many docs as you can Think SOAPStone – why does THIS person have THIS to say at THIS point in history? How would his/her POV be different from someone else in the same time/place?) Write “(POV)” after each POV statement to –A) help you remember to include it –B) help your reader identify your POV statements

DBQ IDENTIFY and EXPLAIN the need for an additional document or source –What type of document would help you to better understand this issue/help you to answer the question. –DON’T just say: I want a doc from a peasant. HOW could that doc help you understand what was going on?

DBQ Expanded Core: –Has a clear, analytical, and comprehensive thesis. –Shows careful and insightful analysis of the documents. –Uses documents pervasively as evidence. –Analyzes point of view in most or all documents. –Analyzes the documents in additional ways – groupings, comparisons, syntheses. –Brings in relevant “outside” historical context. –Explains why additional types of document(s) or sources are needed.

CCOT THESIS, THESIS, THESIS! Address the global issues and the time period(s) specified. Remember in your intro to discuss the BEGINNING of the time period, at least one CHANGE, at least one CONTINUITY, and the END of the time period for the appropriate region.

CCOT Address ALL parts of the question, evenly and thoroughly Changes AND continuities, ALL SPRITE categories or APWH themes mentioned in the question

CCOT Substantiate thesis with appropriate historical evidence EXAMPLES, EXAMPLES, EXAMPLES!

CCOT Use relevant world historical context effectively to explain change over time and/or continuity What was going on in the world that would make this event happen?? Think Cause/Effect

CCOT Analyze the process of change over time/continuity EXPLAIN, EXPLAIN, EXPLAIN! WHY did this event happen? WHY was it important?

CCOT Expanded Core: –Has a clear, analytical, and comprehensive thesis –Analyzes all issues of the question (as relevant): global context, chronology, causation, change, continuity, effects, content –Addresses all parts of the question evenly –Provides ample historical evidence to substantiate thesis –Provides links with relevant ideas, events, and trends in an innovative way
