What is Advertising? A paid public message communicated through various media that promotes the sale of goods and services It benefits both consumers and businesses Consumers are informed about the any goods and services available to them Businesses are able to market their goods and services more efficiently

Advertising Influences Your Lifestyle Advertising’s main goal is to convince you to buy something Ads are designed to show products in the best possible ways You need to have a cautious approach when making buying decisions.

Types of Advertising Factual Ads Provide useful consumer information They describe a product’s features, benefits, cost, and tell where it is sold Comparison Ads Make comparisons with competing products Testimonial Ads Use celebrities, sports professionals, or experts to endorse products Average people who use the product tell how they like using it

Types of Advertising cont. Attention-getter Ads Designed to be entertaining. Use of humor or visual images to gain and hold consumers attention Bandwagon Ads Try to be persuasive. These ads imply that many people use and enjoy the product and you should too Sex-appeal Ads Have strong emotional appeal These ads make consumers feel they will be more attractive and popular if they use the product

Type of Advertising Assignment Get into 6 groups of 2-3 people. Each group will be given a different type of advertising. Based on the type of advertising your group picks, you will design an ad for a new candy bar. Your group will present your ads to the class as if you worked for an advertising agency and were trying to sell your ad to Willy Wonka company.

Evaluating Advertisements By using helpful information and ignoring the rest, you will improve your buying decisions Use these evaluation questions to help you sort through the information presented in ads: Can you determine the purpose of the ad? Is it designed to inform you or persuade you to buy a product or service? Is the information in the ad useful to you? Is it factual and easy to understand? Does it tell you what you want to know about the features, quality, and price?

As part of your evaluation, you also need to determine whether the ad is using a persuasive or deceptive advertising method Persuasive Advertising Offers little or no useful information about a product or service Deceptive Advertising Misleading advertising Not illegal Can offer a “free” item or service

Deceptive Advertising cont. Bait and switch- used to lure shoppers who are looking for bargains The advertisers offer a low-priced item as a bait to get shoppers in the store. Once shoppers are there, the advertiser tries to switch them to a more expensive item. Example-They can do this by telling consumers that they are sold out and only the more expensive item is left

Teen Ads You will receive an ad from a teen magazine. With a partner, answer the following questions on a piece of paper: What is the product being advertised? Who do you think this ad is trying to reach and why? What different words and images are used to make this product attractive to this group? Do you think this ad is effective? Why or why not? What type of advertising technique is the ad using?
