6. WHO do we learn about the character from? DIRECT CHARACTERIZATION  From the NARRATOR! INDIRECT CHARACTERIZATION  From the CHARACTERS themselves!

7. INDIRECT CHARACTERIZATION APPEARANCE What does the character’s appearance say about his/her personality? ACTIONS What doe the character DO? How does the character BEHAVE in different situations? RESPONSE What effect does the character have on other people? How do they feel or react to him/her?

8. INDIRECT CHARACTERIZATION SPEECH What does the character say and how does he/she speak? THOUGHTS What is shown about the character through his/her private thoughts and feelings? Mr. Barrie’s such a jerk!!! Wow! You’re the best Mr.Barrie!

10. COMPLEXITY … are they complex? Flat  Characters that only show ONE personality trait. (We don’t usually know much about them.  Cinderella’s stepmom, Cinna Round  Characters that have DEPTH, like REAL PEOPLE! Show many sides to their personality.  Shrek says:  “Ogres are like onions…”  What does he mean?

11. CHANGE … do they change or stay the same? Static  CHARACTERS that STAY THE SAME throughout the whole story. Meant to COMPARE/CONTRAST to main character. Dynamic  Characters that grow and change throughout the story. Usually the MAIN character (protagonist)
