Aims of Today’s Training To promote understanding of the purpose and implementation of Peer Review of Paediatric Diabetes. To enable organisations to be prepared for the forthcoming peer review of Paediatric Diabetes and ensure that all good practice is shared. To enable organisations to cascade details of the review to others.

Learning Outcomes Understand the principles of peer review and your responsibilities in the process Understand your role and the relationship with the Peer Review Coordinating Team Understand what you need to do for self assessment Practice reviewing evidence required for self assessment Be familiar with and recognise the importance of the DQuiNs electronic communications system

Self Assessment – The Process Purpose of self-assessmentThe requirements of self assessment Self-Assessment should address the measures, the 4 key themes and specific clinical issues The key themes form part of the validation of self assessments

MDT- Evidence Documents Operational Policy Annual Report Work Programme Describing how the team functions and how care is delivered across the patient pathway Outlining policies/processes that govern safe / high quality care Agreement to and demonstration of the clinical guidelines and treatment protocols for the team. Summary assessment of achievements & challenges Demonstration that the team is using available information (including data) to assess its own service MDT Workload & Activity Data (activity by modality, numbers discussed at MDT, MDT attendance) -National Audits -Local Audits -Patient Feedback -Trial Recruitment -Work Programme Update How the team is planning to address weaknesses and further develop its service. Outline of the team’s plans for service improvement & development over the coming year -Audit Programme -Patient feedback -Trial Recruitment -Actions from Previous reviews

Network Group - Evidence Documents Constitution Annual ReportWork Programme The Group’s terms of reference including a description the constitution and how it functions Description of the process explaining how the Network Group links to individual MDTs within Network The current clinical and referral guidelines agreed by the Group The agreed structure and scope of the service delivered across the Network. Summary assessment of achievements & challenges Demonstration that the group is using available information to assess Network services, including a summary of patient feedback and audit data Summary update on implementation of previous year’s work-programme (including progress on implementing actions from previous reviews) Consideration and discussion of performance against clinical indicators How the group is planning to address weaknesses and further develop Network services Outline of the groups plans for Network wide service improvement & development over the coming year Should include addressing actions from previous peer reviews where relevant

Demonstrating Agreement Where agreement to guidelines and policies is required this should be stated clearly on the cover sheet of the relevant evidence document. Evidence Guides will indicate the groups and individuals that need to be documented as agreeing the key evidence documents.

Group Work – A Fictional Paediatric Diabetes Team You are the Paediatric Diabetes team and are required to validate another team’s self-assessment. You will need to review the team’s evidence & for some of the measures highlighted in yellow on the spread sheet, identify whether you agree with the self-assessment or not.

External Verification -The Process All teams that self-assess will be externally verified for this cycle Desk top review of validated assessment undertaken by the Peer Review Coordinating Team Review accuracy of self-assessmentCoordinating Team may request further information Coordinating Team will have access to specialist clinical input and patient/carer input

What Happens Next? 1. Self assessment : November 2012 to February 2013 2. External verification March 2013 3. Brief summary report circulated to MDTs and Networks – April 2013 4. Final report published by May 2013
