ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM Increasing Energy X Ray Gamma UV IRRadio UVCUVB UVA Burning Cancer Burning; Tanning Ageing; Cancer Premature Ageing/Burning Cancer/Sensitisation/Tanning

Sunlight penetration in the skin Source: SCENIHR, Health effects of artificial light, 19 March 2012

Sun Damage Due to over exposure Acute Chronic Death

Drivers of Innovation in Sun and Skin Care Innovation is driven by several factors: Advances in the science and biology of skin and changes to skin through ageing and adverse environmental effects Improvements in sun protection and skin care strategies Introductions of new technologies Increased consumer demands Changes in legislation

Advances in the science and biology of skin Understanding of biology and medicine of skin forever increasing: e.g. Importance of UVA in skin damage Exposure patterns to sunlight throughout life Health benefits of sunlight Potential of infra red and visible light damaging skin Cellular and biochemical mechanisms of skin damage to sun and pollutants

Sun Care in the last 25 years through improvements in Technology Protection has increased against the damaging effects of the sun by: Moving from UVB mainly protection to Broadspectrum protection by increasing UVA protection Increasing available SPF ranges from SPF 2 to SPF 20 to higher range of SPF 6 to SPF 60 (50+) Improving water resistance Improving durability (all day protection)

Sun Care in the last 25 years through improvements in Technology Technology Improvements: Developing and commercialisation of new sunscreen molecules New sunscreens are photostable and broadspectrum Development and commercialisation of new molecular entities for film forming on skin and improving the efficacy of sunscreens. Test method technology for SPF’s and UVA testing

Challenges to Growth in the next 25 years The main challenges are: In the absence of animal testing there is as yet not a fully reliable set of in vitro tests for safety assessment of new molecules such as sunscreens that are listed in Annex VI Investment in cost and time on new sunscreens development is difficult at this time Understanding of skin biology e.g. there have been improvements in sun protection and awareness but melanoma is still increasing

Strengthening the European Personal care sector Factors to be considered: Investment in skin biology and medicine Development and acceptance of in vitro safety/toxicological assessments Encourage investment in the development of sunscreen actives and other related technologies Encourage recruitment of scientists into skin and sun care formulation development and develop specialist skills
