Signs Charts for Polynomial Functions +++++++++0----------------- ---------------0++++++++++ To determine the sign chart of a polynomial function look at the signs of each of it factors. Use a number line that only has the zeros of the polynomial on it. -------0++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ -----------------------------------0+++++++++++ +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++0----- +++++0--------------------------0++++++0------ Where the sign chart is positive graph is above y -axis and where it is negative it is below y -axis.

Sign Charts and Graphs of Functions with Zeros with Multiplicity Greater Than 1 For Zeros with multiplicity greater than 1 the graph will have one of two basic shapes depending on if the multiplicity is odd or even. A "U" shape (Upside down for negative sign chart) A "S" shape (Backward for negative sign chart) ------------------------------------- ++++++++++++++++++0+++ -----0++++++++++++++++++ ++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++0-----------------------0---- Notice that the "U" is upside down and the "S" is backwards.
