1 Energy Efficiency Opportunities Bubble Chart Background

2 “Tale of two channels” Energy Efficiency Opportunities by Channel

3 Bubble Chart −The bubble chart illustrates three dimensions for assessing future energy savings opportunities in the residential sector. Energy savings potential  Difference in regional electricity consumption between business- as-usual scenario and scenario in which conservation measures are implemented Energy consumption  Percentage of total household electricity consumption by major consumer product category groups Market size  From an energy perspective, total annual kWh that new products would consume in the region. −The chart is a guide for strategic planning and is not intended to provide specific regional energy values.

4 Bubble Chart – Energy Savings −Regional energy savings potential is the y-dimension on the chart This dimension shows the relative position of the electricity savings opportunity by room (product category group). Relative positions calculated using 7 th Power Plan data  Excel Spreadsheet - companion-tables-final-7th-power-plan- final-dmndfrcst-fuelprice-etc.xlsx –Downloaded from http://www.nwcouncil.org/energy/powerplan/7/technical  Difference between base scenario and conservation scenario for the year 2025

5 Bubble Chart – Consumption −Regional energy consumption is the x-dimension on the chart This shows the relative annual electricity consumption in the home by room (product category group). Percentage of regional household consumption from 7 th Power Plan data  Excel Spreadsheet - companion- tables-final-7th-power-plan-final- dmndfrcst-fuelprice-etc.xlsx –Downloaded from http://www.nwcouncil.org/energy/powerplan/7/technical  Percentages represent the current energy consumption using 2015 data in spreadsheet.

6 Bubble Chart – Market Size −Regional sales of energy consuming products is an indicator of electricity demand Bubble diameter proportional to annual unit sales of consumer products times average unit energy consumption (UEC) for product category. Sources of market information  Unit sales data – CEA, AHAM, AHRI, EPA, DOE, private communications with retailers  UEC data – EPA, DOE, Regional Technical Forum, California DEER database

7 Strategic Thinking −In these types of charts, category groups to the upper right should be a key part of a portfolio −The bubble position on the y-axis may change over time Accelerated market penetration of efficient technology will lower it. Emergence of new, more efficient technologies will raise it. −Bubbles may shift to the right. For example, consumer electronics share of household energy use is projected to grow. Monitor impact of consumer product market changes on residential energy consumption −The relative size of the blue and orange bubbles suggests a channel implementation strategy Larger bubbles give higher probability of reaching customers and realizing energy savings potential
