2. Plot? What does that mean?
A sequence of related events that make up a story. There are four main parts:
Exposition
Complications
Climax
Denouement

3. Exposition The basic situation is introduced. This is where we learn:
Main Characters
Background information
Setting
Main conflict or problem
Internal Conflict—within a person
External Conflict—person vs. outside force

4. Complications
Problems that occur as a result of attempts to “fix” the main problem

5. Climax This is the most exciting, or suspenseful moment of the story
At times it may decide the outcome of the main conflict
Usually takes place near the end of the story

6. Denouement
Problems are resolved
Story ends
Sometimes a “cliffhanger”

8. Exposition
Characters:
Nemo
Marlin
Dori
Setting: ocean

9. Exposition (continued)
Background Information:
Nemo’s father is overprotective because Nemo’s mom and the other eggs were eaten by a barracuda. Nemo has a deformed fin from the barracuda attack. He is starting his first day of school.
Main conflict:
Nemo is taken by P. Sherman when he defies his father and swims beyond the drop-off to touch the boat.

10. Complications
Marlin meets Dori who offers to help him find Nemo, but she has memory problems.
Bruce, the shark, goes after Marlin & Dori when Dori gets a bloody nose.
The goggles fall into a dark trench. Marlin & Dori go after them, the two are chased by an anglerfish.
The silverfish tell Dori, not Marlin, to swim through the trench not over it. When M&D get to the trench, Marlin decides not to trust Dori and swims over the trench. They run into jellyfish.

11. Complications (continued)
Dori gets stung by the jellyfish and Marlin believes she is dead.
Marlin & Dori get swallowed by a whale.
Nemo gets stuck in the filter of the fish tank.
Marlin & Dori are chased by seagulls.
Marlin sees Nemo floating upside down in the baggie and believes him to be dead.

12. Climax
Dori gets caught in the net and Nemo goes in to help save her and all of the other fish. (Swim down!!!!)

13. Denouement
Nemo and Marlin return home. Marlin is not so overprotective. He allows Nemo to return to school. Dori goes with them and they all live peacefully with the sharks.
