2 U. S. Presidents During Reconstruction Abraham ___Lincoln_________ was President at the end of the Civil_War and at the beginning of Reconstruction Andrew Johnson became President when Lincoln was shot at Ford’s theatre in Washington D. C. Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth.

3 Reconstruction and Freed Slaves The Freedmen’s Bureau provided food, shelter, education, clothing, and job training for the freed slaves. Southerners made the Black Codes to limit the freedom of ex-slaves. Bitter Ex-Confederates started the hate group called the Ku Klux Klan.

4 Impeachment Andrew Johnson wanted a different kind of Reconstruction than the Radical Reconstruction in Congress. When President Johnson refused to obey the Tenure of Office Act. The House of Representatives voted articles of Impeachment against him.

5 The Gilded Age Mark Twain used the term the Gilded Age to describe all of the corruption during Reconstruction and its aftermath (1865-1900). Gilded meant that something looked good on the outside (gold paint) but it was really rotten on the inside( old termite infested wood).

6 Ulysses S. Grant Ulysses S. Grant was a hero of the Civil War who ran for president. When he became President, he appointed his corrupt friends to government jobs. His friends were such big crooks that they caused terrible scandals in Washington.

7 Scandals in the Grant Administration The Whiskey Ring cheated the government and taxpayers out of taxes on whiskey. The Credit Mobilier Scandal involved fraud and cheating by a railroad company. Crooks at the Bureau of Indian Affairs cheated the Indians out of food, clothing, and blankets.

8 Segregation and Jim Crow Separation of people based on race is called segregation. The laws that enforced segregation in the South were called Jim Crow Laws.

9 Political Corruption Northerners who went down South to make a profit during Reconstruction were called Carpetbaggers. Southerners who helped with Radical Reconstruction were called Scalawags.

10 More Political Corruption Giving government jobs to people who help you to get elected is patronage or the spoils system. Party bosses ran political machines.

11 Westward Expansion The –Transcontinental Railroad took settlers and supplies out West. The Homestead Act let settlers have 160 acres of land if they lived on it for five years.

12 Other New Laws The Pacific Railway Act provided money to build the transcontinental railroad. The Dawes General Allotment Act forced Native Americans onto small farms and made them assimilate into the White culture.

13 Native American Leaders Chief Joseph was the leader of the Nez Pierce Indians. Sitting Bull defeated General George Custer at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. A fierce Apache leader was Geronimo.
