1 “40 Acres, and Maybe a Mule” One of the greatest mistakes in American history

2 Green Book: Read “Forty Acres and a Mule” on p234 and “Background Check” on p235 - Write questions & answer them, or answer with complete thoughts. 1. What are 40 acres and a mule enough for? 2. What gave free blacks hope that they’d get it? 3. Does this change your opinion of Sherman at all? 4. Do you think this affected Southerners’ opinion of Sherman positively or negatively? 5. How did the 40 acres & mule dream die? 6. What situation was created because free blacks basically didn’t own anything?

3 A Biblical Approach 12 “If your kinsman, a Hebrew man or woman, is sold to you, then he shall serve you six years, but in the seventh year you shall set him free. 13 When you set him free, you shall not send him away empty-handed. 14 You shall furnish him liberally from your flock and from your threshing floor and from your wine vat; you shall give to him as the L ORD your God has blessed you.” - Deuteronomy 15:12-14 7. What problems - that still affect us today - were created because slaves were set free and then given no help to start their free lives? 8. How would the Biblical approach have been better? 9. What about the postwar South would have made the Biblical approach difficult or impossible? 10. If you just took Southerners’ land and gave it to slaves, they could correctly argue that their property rights were being violated. Can you think of a solution that might have worked out better for everyone?
