Types of Promotion Section 17.2 Sales Promotions sales promotion All marketing activities, other than personal selling, advertising, and public relations, that are directed at business or retail customers to boost sales. Sales promotions are usually supported by advertising activities that include trade promotions and consumer promotions.

Promotional Allowances Promotional Allowances – cash payments or discounts given by manufacturers to wholesalers or retailers for performing activities to encourage sales. EXAMPLE: Selling food to a grocer and promoting an extra allowance to display new food products in the front of the store and/or having displayed on a card board pop-up display.

Cooperative Advertising A manufacturer supports the retailer by helping to pay for the cost of advertising its product locally. Collaborative effort to promote. Not common. Great for small businesses with limited funds.

Slotting Allowances A sum paid by a vendor or manufacturer to a retail chain establishment for making room for a product on its store shelves, making room for the product in its warehouse, entering the product data in its inventory system, and programming its computers to recognize the product’s barcode. Fees can run up to $50K per product, per store in the US on an annual basis.

Sales Force Promotions Awards given to dealers and employees who successfully meet or exceed a sales quota. Can be set for a period of time, etc. May include a cash bonus, items, etc. EX: Natural High T-Shirt Sales

Types of Promotion Section 17.2 HW Assignment – Due on Tuesday You will spend a week collecting coupons and other premiums delivered in the newspaper, magazines, and mail (no online). You will create a descriptive log of these promotional items. It will include the type of consumer promotion, duration of the offer, notes on its visual appeal, and your opinion on its effectiveness.
