3 Reconstruction of the South after the Civil War  Reconstruction Period- The period following the Civil War in which Congress passed laws designed to rebuild the country and bring the Southern states back into the Union.  South is destroyed, most of the south needed to be rebuilt.

4 Top 5 problems the new nation faced after the Civil War  Improve quality of life for former slaves  Destruction of South’s infrastructure farms, plantations, machinery, livestock, railroads, banks  President Lincoln Assassinated  Persistent Racial Tensions  620,000 soldiers killed ACTIVITY  With your groups order the effects of the civil war from most severe to least severe.  Discuss

5 Activity  With your groups you are going to develop your own reconstruction plan.  Using your severity sequence chart created with group to determine which issue needs to be addressed first and a plan of action fix these issues.  Use the following questions to guide your response What is your eventual goal for each problem? Who will benefit from your plan? Who will suffer? Explain why you believe your plan will improve conditions in the country.

7 Essential Question  Based on the effects of the Civil War, is it possible for the north and south to come together?  What problems did the Civil War pose to the newly reunited nation?  Fully explain and answer question!!

8 Analyze the following quote: “For we colored people did not know how to be free, and the white people did not know how to have a free colored person about them.”
