1 Advantages in the Civil War- Quick Review Bell Ringer: Even though the South did not have many advantages, there were a few aspects that allowed them to be competitive in the war. Explain what these are.

3 Union Plans for Victory The Anaconda Plan Capture Richmond, VA (the capital of the CSA. Gain control of the Mississippi to split the South in two. Use a naval blockade to slowly suffocate the Confederacy

5 Abraham Lincoln Elected President in 1860. His election led 11 states to secede from the Union. Wanted to: 1. Preserve the Union 2. End slavery (Emancipation Proclamation) In 1863, freed the slaves from the Confederacy with the Emancipation Proclamation. Gifted speaker: “House Divided” speech. “A house divided against itself can not stand.” The Gettysburg Address Directed the nation through this challenging time Assassinated just five days after the South surrendered

6 George McClellan Twice in charge of the Union Army. Arrogant man. Cautious on the battlefield. Was hired and fired multiple times by Lincoln for being cautious. Demonstrates one of the North’s problems.

7 Ulysses S. Grant The best and most famous northern general. Was the 6 th commanding general of the Union army Believed in “total war” – using all resources at your disposal to crush your enemy. Aggressive leader- Used his much larger army to crash Confederate lines and force them to surrender. 8 William T. Sherman Union General Used total war to devastate the South. Led Sherman’s March to the Sea through Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia which left devastation in the states. 10 Confederate Plans for Victory Make the war long and drawn out in hopes that the Union will no longer want to fight. Inflict high casualties. Get France and England to become allies with the South. Capture Washington, D.C. Demonstrate that the South is justified in their secession. Relating the separation to the American Revolution.

12 Jefferson Davis The first and only President of the Confederacy. A former soldier in the Mexican- American War Not a strong leader, he was unable to find a suitable strategy for defeating the larger, more industrial Union. He was unable to convince France and England to become allies with the South. After the war, was arrested and put in jail for two years before treason charges were eventually dropped.

13 Robert E. Lee- Best Civil War General When South Carolina seceded, Lee was offered command of the Union Army by President Lincoln. Although against slavery and secession, could not bring himself to fight against his home state of VA. Highly respected and revered by his soldiers and his opponents Able to inflict huge losses to Union forces with a much smaller army due to his skill as a tactician. Unable to ultimately overcome Union’s size and resources. 14 Thomas “Stonewall”Jackson 2 nd in command behind Lee in the Confederacy. Great leader who was killed by “friendly fire” at Chancellorsville. Great strategist and had a brilliant military mind.
