Subject (Hamnet) Drawings -- 19th century. Subject (Hamnet) Sebastian (Fictitious character : Shakespeare. Tempest), depicted. Associated Name (Hamnet) Allom, Thomas, 1804-1872, attributed artist. Notes (Hamnet) This record contains unverifiable data from old cards and may contain incorrect or incomplete text. Please consult Curator for assistance. Notes (Hamnet) Artist: Bookseller attributed the drawing to Thomas Allom, a 19th cent. watercolorist who worked primarily in topographical subjects. This wash drawing resembles more closely the work of John Masey Wright and the inked note on the verso of the Folger copy seems to corroborate that conclusion. Notes (Hamnet) Executed on laid paper, cut, no watermark visible. On verso in brown ink: ' Twelfth Night - by Wright m o /c'; in pencil 'Allom' and '#1621'. Unsigned. Notes (Hamnet) Provenance: Item was formerly mounted on a board with a wash drawing of a scene from Richard III attributed to William Hamilton. The drawings were purchased by the Folgers from Maggs Bros., March 29, 1926 (cs. 1621). Notes (Hamnet) Subject: Drawing shows Viola and Sebastian standing center surrounded by nine other figures and a dog. The depiction is similar to two other watercolors by Wright which are part of a group tableaux series of Shakespeare illustrations (ART Box W951 no.31,33). Call Number (Hamnet) ART Box W951 no.177 (size S)
