Report Breakout session 11.3 - Energy and Mineral Resources Management

New Societal Benefit Areas

“GEO will advocate the value of Earth observations, engage communities and deliver data and information in support of Energy and Mineral Resources Management by enhancing the discovery, development and sustainable production of mineral and renewable energy resources; in order to facilitate substantial increases in the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix, through usable, actionable information on resource assessment, monitoring and forecasting of intermittent energy sources, including solar, wind, ocean, hydropower, geo-thermal power and biomass.” Current Description

SDG 7: Targets By 2030, ensure universal access to affordable, reliable and modern energy services By 2030, increase substantially the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix By 2030, double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency By 2030, enhance international cooperation to facilitate access to clean energy research and technology, including renewable energy, energy efficiency and advanced and cleaner fossil-fuel technology, and promote investment in energy infrastructure and clean energy technology By 2030, expand infrastructure and upgrade technology for supplying modern and sustainable energy services for all in developing countries, in particular least developed countries, small island developing States, and land-locked developing countries, in accordance with their respective programmes of support

Presentations Part A: Renewable Energies  GEO Renewable Energy Initiative, Thierry Ranchin (MINES ParisTech)  Global Atlas for Renewable Energy, Nicolas Fichaux (IRENA)  Outcomes of the Energy Stakeholder Ideation Workshop, Richard Eckman (NASA) Part B: Mineral Resources  GEO Community Activity on Mineral Resources, Stéphane Chevrel (BRGM)  ASTER Global Geoscience Product, Michael Abrams (JPL)  EuroGeoSurveys contribution to the GEO ‘Energy and Minerals’ SBA, Luca Demicheli (EuroGeoSurveys)

Session Outcome 1: Identification of Key Objectives GEO will advocate the value of Earth observations, engage communities and deliver data and information in support of Energy and Mineral Resources Management by enhancing the discovery, development and sustainable production and use of mineral and renewable energy resources; in order : to facilitate substantial increases in the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix, through usable, actionable information on resource assessment, monitoring and forecasting of intermittent energy sources, including solar, wind, ocean, hydropower, geo- thermal power and biomass. to facilitate the sustainable management of geo-resources and to address the environmental, societal and unequal economic impacts of their exploitation

Session Outcome 2: 2017-2019 Activities GI-10 selected List of activities o The H2020 ConnectinGEO project (2015-2017) has an activity related to identification of essential variables for renewable energies, gap analysis and industrial challenges on in-situ measurements (http://www.connectingeo.net)http://www.connectingeo.net o Operational COPERNICUS Atmosphere Monitoring Service for Solar Radiation o Call for project within H2020 ERA PLANET o Improvement of the Global Atlas for renewable energies from International-Renewable Energies Agency – IRENA (http://irena.masdar.ac.ae/).http://irena.masdar.ac.ae/ o Collaboration with WMO GFCS for Energy and Copernicus Climate Change Service o …

Session Outcome 2: 2017-2019 Activities CA-06: Scope of work for CA-06 in Energy and Minerals SBA to be presented at GEO-XIII in St Petersburg Global ASTER Geoscience map : challenges, collaborations, network, path for moving forward Definition of relevant essential variables Cross-cutting activities –Links with GI-10 and GI-18 (SDGs) –Illegal mining : links with GFOI, GMOS (GEOBON?) CA-25: To develop a land base multi-element geochemical baseline database for mineral resource and environmental management.

Session Outcome 3: Recommendations on data, information and knowledge within the GEO Portal Lot of assets already available and discoverable within the GEO Portal, the web-service-energy.org community portal (harvested regularly) Organizing the resources within the GEO Portal Global datasets for mineral activities (One-Geology, ASTER global datasets, extension of EuroGeoSurveys databases, …)

Session Outcome 4: How to organize the SBA community? Continue structuration and engagement of existing Renewable Energy and Mineral Community (difficulty: diffuse aspects of minerals across SDGs) Use of Essential Variables and Gap analysis identification for engaging and structuring communities Issues that are not addressed in other fora, can be used for structuration and engagement
