COMPARATIVE AND SUPERLATIVE ADJECTIVES Adjectives can also be used to describe by comparing nouns

COMPARATIVE: means to compare 2 items. EX: Jim is taller than Will. SUPERLATIVE: means to compare 3 or more items. EX: Elf is the funniest movie I have ever seen.

RULES FOR COMPARATIVE/SUPERLATIVE FORMS: Words with 1 syllable: Add –er on the end of the word to show comparative form like tall to taller, fast to faster, and smart to smarter Add –est to the end of the word to show superlative form like tallest, fastest and smartest

Word with 2 syllables: If the 2 syllable word ends in Y: Change the Y to I and add –er or est just like the one syllable words EXAMPLES: Pretty, prettier, prettiest Friendly, friendlier, friendliest Speedy, speedier, speediest

If the word is 2 syllables NOT ending in Y or has 3 or more syllables: Add more in front of the word for comparative form like more beautiful, more intelligent, and more heroic Add most in front of the word for superlative form like most beautiful, most intelligent, and most heroic
