Unit 19 review Adjectives describe nouns Adverbs describe 3 things: 1.VerbsShe speaks quickly. 2.AdjectivesMichael is really tall. 3.AdverbsJenny speaks very quietly. Adverbs of manner normally in the –ly form. (but adjectives can end in -ly too). Adjectives can go before a noun or after a non-action verb. Adverbs usually go after the verb Adverbs go before the adjective or adverb it describes. Adverbs of manner- action verbs

(Early, fast, hard, late, wrong) Have the same adjective and adverb forms. Not at all (after a verb or verb+ object)- They didn’t decorate (the place) at all. Not at all (after or before an adjective or another verb)- It wasn’t nice at all. It wasn’t at all nice.

(yes) The new Pizza Place is just as good as the one on Knight Street. Is the comparison weaker or stronger now? (stronger) The new Pizza Place is not as quiet as the one on Knight Street. Is the Pizza Place on Knight Street quiet? (yes) Is the new Pizza Place equally quiet? (no)

Note 2- Comparative adjective + than Show how things are different At the new Pizza Place, the choices are more varied than at the other locations. Are the choices varied at the new Pizza Place? (yes) Are the choices equally varied at the other Pizza Place? (no)

At the new Pizza Place, the choices are even more varied than at the other locations. Is the comparison weaker or stronger now? (stronger) Less than Pizza Place is not as cheap as Crown Pizza. Pizza Place is more expensive than Crown Pizza. Pizza Place is less cheap than Crown Pizza. We don’t use less… than with one syllable adjectives such as cheap.

Bill: Let’s have the one with chicken. It’s more interesting than the traditional pizza. Pam: But it’s also more expensive. What are Pam and Bill comparing? (a pizza with a chicken and a traditional pizza). Why doesn’t Pam mention the traditional pizza? (Because it is not necessary. She is comparing the pizza with chicken and the traditional pizza). ____ (what would be the full version) It’s also more expensive than the traditional pizza.

Note 4 Adjectives can be repeated to show increase or decrease Prices are getting lower and lower. At Crown Pizza, the menu is getting more and more varied. The staff is becoming less and less professional.

Note 5 To use two comparative adjectives to show cause and effect: The better the pizza, the higher the price. Nouns are given in this example because the comparative adjectives better and higher give information about different things: the pizza and the price. The fresher, the better. There are no nouns because both adjectives give information about the same thing: the ingredients.
