Topic: Forms of Energy PSSA: 3.4.7.C / S8.C.3.1
2
Objective: TLW compare the six forms of energy.
3
MI #1: Thermal Energy Thermal energy is all of the kinetic energy due to the random motion of particles. Thermal energy is measured using temperature.
4
MI #2: Chemical Energy Chemical energy is the energy of a compound that changes as its atoms are rearranged. Chemical energy is absorbed and released through chemical reactions.
5
MI #3: Electrical Energy Electrical energy is the energy of moving electrons. Electrons are negatively charged subatomic particles.
6
MI #4: Sound Energy Sound energy is produced by the vibrations of matter. Sound cannot be transmitted in a vacuum.
7
MI #5: Light Energy Light energy is energy that transmitted through electromagnetic waves. Light energy comes in different forms based on the wave’s location in the electromagnetic spectrum.
8
MI #6: Nuclear Energy Nuclear energy is energy that comes from changes in the nucleus of an atom. Nuclear energy is produced through the processes of fission and fusion.
9
So What…? Real Life Application Understanding the forms of energy will allow you to understand how energy can be converted from one form to another (For example – nuclear to electrical) to make it more useful.
