1 Course Selection: Science To graduate students must complete either – 3 science credits and 4 math credits – 4 science credits and 3 math credits It is recommended that all students take chemistry in high school. Recommendations for Chemistry and Physics depend on your math level.

2 Selected Topics in Biology Level: 4.0 Grade: 11 Periods/Cycle: 6 (This course is only 1 semester) DO NOT SAY YOU WANT TO BE IN THIS COURSE!! Course Description: – If you do not pass the Biology Keystone exam in May you will be placed in this course. This course will reteach the main topics from Biology and you will have to retake the Keystone at the end of the course.

3 Applied Chemistry 3714 Level: 4.0 Grades: mostly 11 Periods/Cycle: 7 Prerequisites: None Course Description: This course introduces students to fundamental principles in chemistry and shows how chemistry is applied in their lives and in society. Math is the most important factor in determining how successful you will be in chemistry.

4 Intro to Chemistry 3114 Level: 4.0 Grades: mostly 11 Periods/Cycle: 7 Prerequisites: – Intended for students enrolling in Alg2E 5.0 Course Description: Students learn about the periodic table, chemical reactions, molarity, thermochemistry, etc. – Math is the most important factor in determining how successful you will be in chemistry.

5 Chemistry 3115 Level: 5.0 Grades: mostly 11 Periods/Cycle: 7 Prerequisites: – Must be taking Algebra 2 5.0 or 6.0 concurrently Course Description: Students learn about the periodic table, chemical reactions, molarity, thermochemistry, etc. – Math is the most important factor in determining how successful you will be in chemistry.

6 Chemistry 3116 Level: 6.0 Grades: mostly 11 Periods/Cycle: 7 Prerequisites: – B or higher in Algebra2 6.0 or and A in Algebra2 5.0 It is strongly advised that students enrolled in 6.0 chemistry also be in 6.0 math. Course Description: – Students learn about the periodic table, chemical reactions, molarity, thermochemistry, etc. – Math is the most important factor in determining how successful you will be in chemistry.

7 Chemistry-2 3126 Level: 6.0 Grades: 11 and 12 Periods/Cycle: 7 Prerequisites: – B or higher in Chem 1 – B or higher in Algebra 2 5.0 – Concurrently taking physics is advised Course Description: – In depth look at topics in chemistry. – Prepares students for college level chemistry course. – Math is the most important factor in determining how successful you will be in chemistry.

8 AP Chemistry 3127 Level: 6.5 Grades: 11 and 12 Periods/Cycle: 8 Prerequisites: – B or higher in Chem 6.0 – A in Chem. 5.0 – Completed or concurrently taking course in Physics and Calculus is advised It is strongly advised that current 5.0 chemistry students interested in continuing in chemistry consider Chem2 6.0 instead of AP Chemistry. Course Description: – Most in depth Chemistry course offered an NP. – Students will take the AP Exam in May. – After AP exam, students will participate in a lab to determine the chemical composition of a unknown substance.

9 Advanced Biology 3026 Level: 6.0 Grades: 11 and 12 Periods/Cycle: 7 Prerequisites: – A grade of “A” in Biology 5.0 and Chemistry 5.0 (or taking Chemistry 6.0 concurrently – “B” in Biology 6.0 – Chemistry 6.0 may be taken concurrently. Course Description: – This course is best for individuals going into the medical field. – Focus in is anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, nutrition and disease. – Dissections (including cats) are large part of the course. – Summer work must be completed. – College level rigor

10 AP Biology 3027 Level: 6.5 Grades: 11 and 12 Periods/Cycle: 8 Prerequisites: – B or higher in biology 6.0 – Chemistry must be completed or taken concurrently. Course Description: – College Level Introductory Biology course (college credit available with qualifying score on AP exam) – Focus on Molecular & Cellular biology, Genetics, Evolution, Organisms & Populations, Structure & Function – College level rigor – Fetal Pig dissection – Intended for any student interested in biology (will not cover body systems in as much detail as Advanced Biology)

11 Physics 3225 Level: 5.0 Grades: 11 and 12 Periods/Cycle: 7 Prerequisites: – Precalculus 5.0 must be taken concurrently or completed with at least a C. Course Description: – Includes topics such as energy, torque, dynamics, kinematics, etc. – Requires good math skills.

12 Physics 3226 Level: 6.0 Grades: 11 and 12 Periods/Cycle: 7 Prerequisites: – Precalculus 6.0 must be taken concurrently or completed with at least a C. Course Description: – Includes topics such as energy, torque, dynamics, kinematics, etc. – Requires good math skills.

13 AP Physics 1 – Algebra Based 3217 Level: 6.5 (1.15 credits) Grades: 11 and 12 Periods/Cycle: 7 Prerequisites: – Precalculus 6.0 must be taken concurrently or completed with at least a C. Course Description: – Prepares students for a foundation in physics for students in life or applied sciences (not in intended for students pursuing advanced physics or engineering) – Includes topics such as energy, torque, dynamics, kinematics, etc.

14 AP Physics C Mechanics (Calculus based) 3237 Level: 6.5 (1.15 credits) Grades: 11 and 12 Periods/Cycle: 7 Prerequisites: – Calculus must be completed or taken concurrently. Course Description: – Prepares students for calculus- based college level Physics courses – Prepares students for AP Physics C Mechanics exam – Includes topics such as energy, torque, dynamics, kinematics, etc.

15 AP Physics C Electricity & Magnetism (Calculus based) 3247 Level: 6.5 (1.15 credits) Grades: 11 and 12 Periods/Cycle: 7 Prerequisites: – Successful completion of AP Physics: Mechanics with a minimum grade of B Course Description: – Prepares students for calculus- based college level Physics courses – Prepares students for AP Physics C Electricity & Magnetism exam – Includes topics such as Electric Force and Fields, Induction, capacitance.

16 Astronomy 3325/3326 Level: 5.0 or 6.0 Grades: 11 and 12 Periods/Cycle: 6 Prerequisites: – Algebra 2 and Chemistry 5.0 must be completed or taken concurrently Course Description: – For students interested in space science and the universe. – Some time will be spent in the planetarium.

17 Forensic Science 3525 Level: 5.0 Grades: 11 and 12 Periods/Cycle: 6 Prerequisites: – B or higher in Chemistry 5.0 – B or higher in Algebra 2 5.0 Course Description: – Good for students interested in a criminal justice career. This course is an application of biology and chemistry for various techniques such as DNA fingerprinting, microscopy, toxicology. There is also a pig dissection.

18 Genetics and Embryology 3426 Level: 6.0 Grades: 11 and 12 Periods/Cycle: 6 Prerequisites: – B or higher in Biology 6.0 – A or higher in Biology 5.0 Course Description: – Good for students interested in a medical career. – In more in depth look at the various genetics topics from biology, including: DNA, Mendelian genetics, genetic engineering, etc.

19 Genetics 3845 Level: 5.0 Grades: 11 and 12 Periods/Cycle: 6 This is a semester course! Prerequisites: – B or higher in biology 5.0 – C or higher in biology 6.0 Course Description: – A more in depth look at DNA, Mendelian genetics, diseases, mitosis and meiosis, genetic engineering, etc. – Students will be required to make a pedigree of their own family tree.

20 Botany 3824/3825 Level: 4.0 or 5.0 Grades: 11 and 12 Periods/Cycle: 6 This is a semester course! Prerequisites: – Pass Biology Course Description: – Topics include, hydroponics, plant structure and function, diversity, evolution, photosynthesis, ecology and reproduction. – Students will be required to work in the greenhouse and grow plants.

21 Marine Science 3834/3835 Level: 4.0 or 5.0 Grades: 11 and 12 Periods/Cycle: 6 This is a semester course! Prerequisites: – Pass Biology Course Description: – Students will learn about the chemical and physical properties of water, ecology, and animal adaptations for ocean survival. – Students will have to dissect fish. – There is a field trip to the adventure aquarium.

22 Meteorology 3874/3875 Level: 4.0 or 5.0 Grades: 11 and 12 Periods/Cycle: 6 This is a semester course! Prerequisites: – Pass Geometry or taking it concurrently Course Description: – Students will learn about the weather, including weather fronts, clouds, storms and precipitation. Student will use current weather maps to make predictions.

23 Ecology 3864 Level: 4.0 Grades: 11 and 12 Periods/Cycle: 6 This is a semester course! Prerequisites: – Pass Biology Course Description: – Students will learn about humans and their interactions with the environment. We will emphasize ecology in everyday life. Outside field work is required.

24 Science of Flight 3915 Level: 5.0 Grades: 9 - 12 Periods/Cycle: 6 1 st year students do not have to wear the Air Force Uniform! Prerequisites: None Can earn college credits through Adam State University for taking this course. Course Description: – Students will learn how airplanes fly, human physiology of flight, and the effects of weather on aircraft. – Students will have the opportunity to use the flight simulator and build model aircraft. – There are numerous field trips available throughout the year.

25 Frontiers of Aviation 3905 Level: 5.0 Grades: 10 - 12 Periods/Cycle: 6 1 st year students do not have to wear the Air Force Uniform! Prerequisites: None Can earn college credits through Adam State University for taking this course. Course Description: – Students will learn how flight has evolved through science. – Students will have the opportunity to use computer models and simulators. – There are numerous field trips available throughout the year.

26 Aerospace Science 3925 Level: 5.0 Grades: 10 - 12 Periods/Cycle: 6 1 st year students do not have to wear the Air Force Uniform! Prerequisites: None Students can earn college credits through Adam State University for taking this course. Course Description: – Students will learn about space travel, satellites, and spacecraft. – Students will have the opportunity design, build, and launch rockets. – There are numerous field trips available throughout the year.
