5 Prince Henry of Portugal 1418: Opened the 1 st School of Navigation which trained future explorers Go, sail along the coast of Africa! Find a route to Asia! Let the Age of Discovery begin!

6 Bartolomeu Dias 1488 Sailed along the west coast of Africa all the way to the Cape of Good Hope 1 st to reach the Indian Ocean Discovered a route between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans

16 Christopher Columbus 1492 Born in Italy Thought he could find a sea route to Asia by sailing westward rather than around Africa Landed in the Bahamas Thought he was in Indonesia (East Indies), so he called the people Indians. Oops!

21 Did people explore the world before the Age of Discovery? Yes, but they mostly traveled by land. Marco Polo traveled from Italy (Europe) to China. Ibn Battuta (Muslim Arab) traveled from Morocco throughout Africa, Middle East, and far east Asia Not all traveled by land, the Vikings, like Leif Erikson traveled by sea, but they didn’t travel all the way from Europe (they came from Greenland and Iceland)
