Types of Science Science undoubtedly touches and influences everything we do or see in this incredible universe!

Branches of Science Natural Science Social Science Formal Science Applied Science

Natural Science Physical Science – study of non-living systems Earth Science – sciences relating to our planet Life Science – study of living organisms

Physical Science Physics – the study of matter and its interactions with the universe. Chemistry – the study of matter and the changes it undergoes.

Physics One of the oldest academic disciplines considering its inclusion of Astronomy. Provides fundamental explanations for every observed natural phenomenon.

Chemistry Concerned with the composition, behavior (or reaction), structure, and properties of matter, as well as the changes it undergoes. Studies various substances, atoms, molecules, and matter (especially carbon-based).

Earth Science Ecology – study of the relationship between living organisms and their environments. Oceanography – study of the Earth’s Oceans Geology – study of the ‘solid’ Earth (Rocks) and the processes by which they change. Meteorology – study of the atmosphere and weather forecasting.

Ecology Topics include the composition, distribution, amount (biomass), number, and changing states of organisms within and among ecosystems.

Oceanography Study of: Marine organisms Ecosystem dynamics Ocean currents and waves Plate-techtonics

Geology Gives insight into the history of the physical Earth and the changes it has undergone since it formed. Provides primary evidence for plate-techtonics and the history of life in general. Can also refer to the study of the solid features of any celestial body – like the moon and Mars

Meteorology Fairly new branch of science made popular in the 18 th century. Most substantial breakthroughs occurred in the 19 th century. The 20 th century saw advancements in weather forecasting due to the developments of computer technology.

Life Science Biology – study of life and living organisms ********************************************************* Zoology – branch of biology relating to the animal kingdom. Human Biology – human focused biology Botany – the biology of plants

Biology Studies life and living organisms including their structure, function, growth, origin, evolution, distribution, and taxonomy. Biology is a vast subject containing many subdivisions, topics, and disciplines.

Zoology Studies the structure, embryology, evolution, classification, habits, and distribution of all animals (both living and extinct).

Human Biology Biological anthropology of humans Nutrition and medicine Anatomy Neuroscience Genetics Physiology Psychology

Botany Covers the study of plants (plant sciences): Growth & Reproduction Structure & Development of Metabolism Diseases Chemical Properties Evolutionary relationships among groups
