I. The Depression Worsens A.By 1933 thousands of banks closed, bread lines (free food) common place, soup kitchens (run by private charities) were everywhere

B.Americans unable to pay mortgages or rents were evicted C.Shantytowns sprung up everywhere, referred to as “Hoovervilles” (Hoover blamed)

E.Farmers – 1.1920s farm prices dropped. 2.1932 – Mississippi Valley drought caused “Dustbowl” 3.Many farmers migrated to California hoping to find a better life.

II. Escaping the Depression - Movies and Radio became an escape from the hardships of the Depression A.Movies 1.Walt Disney produced first feature length animated film “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.

2.Other films included: “Wizard of Oz”, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Gone with the Wind”, contained stories of triumph over adversity.

B.Radio Shows 1.Comedy: George Burns and Gracie Allen, Jack Benny, Amos and Andie 2.Drama: Little Orphan Annie, The Lone Ranger 3.Soap Operas

III. The Depression in Art - Homeless and Unemployed became the subject of literature and art. A.Thomas Hart Benton and Grant Wood emphasized American values in Art

B.John Steinbeck’s 1939 novel “The Grapes of Wrath” told story of Oklahoma family escaping dust bowl poverty to go to California.
