Marion County Public Schools Acceptable Use Guidelines for Network Access

Overview Users will be responsible and ethical, and use the network system in a legal manner. Irresponsible, unethical and illegal use may result in access privileges being suspended or revoked. School disciplinary action and/or appropriate legal action may be taken.

Network Guideline 1 Appropriate usage MCPS supports only materials suitable for school-age children that enhance the research and inquiry process. Users are not to attempt to access inappropriate information.

Guideline 2 Inappropriate, unethical and illegal behaviors Attempting to or interfering with the MCPS computer systems. Violating federal and state law dealing with any students’ rights to privacy. Logging in or logging out of your account improperly or using another person’s account.

Guideline 2 Inappropriate, unethical and illegal behaviors (continued) Using profanity, obscenity or other language which may be offensive to another user. Sending unauthorized or unsolicited email “spam” including “junk mail”. Harassing anyone by email, text messaging, telephone or paging.

Guideline 2 Inappropriate, unethical and illegal behaviors (continued) Reposting personal communications without the author’s prior consent. Copying commercial software and other copyright protected materials.

Guideline 2 Inappropriate, unethical and illegal behaviors: (continued) Using the network for any illegal activity. Using proxy websites (sites that allow access to blocked websites) is prohibited. Connecting computers, printers, switches, hubs, routers, wireless access points, mini-devices, and any network attached devices that are not the property of MCPS is prohibited.

Guideline 3 Conserving resources to assure access for all. Log off the desktop/portal when finished. Exit Internet Explorer when not using the Internet. Streaming media, MP3 or radio website use is prohibited by students. Log off the network before leaving any computer station.

Guideline 4 Your Account The person in whose name the account is issued is responsible at all times for its proper use and will not give his/her password to others.

Guideline 5 Keeping our network secure Avoid knowingly or accidently spreading computer viruses. Do not upload files from unknown sources. Deliberate attempts to impair or disrupt system performance will be viewed as criminal activity by state and federal law.

Guideline 6 Student resources Students are authorized to use the marionstudents.net domain (live @edu) for e-mail and collaboration tools for instructional learning. Use of other web based e-mail and other collaboration tools are prohibited. Never consider electronic communications to be private.
