Tuesday Aug 26 Objective: Use CER (claim, evidence, reasoning) to prove that fire is alive or not alive. Checkpoint: A new specimen was found. The following evidence has been gathered thus far: 1.It weighed 100g on Monday and 150 g today. 2.When a light was shone on it, it moved away from the light. 3.It was given fruit. All of the fruit is still there. Which characteristics of life has the specimen displayed? Which characteristics of life has the specimen not yet displayed? HW: CER fire paragraph (due Wed/Thurs)

Characteristics of Living Things 1.Obtain and Use Energy 2.Grow 3.Respond to the environment 4.Made of Cells 5.Reproduce

How to write a scientific argument “CER” C = CLAIM E = EVIDENCE R = REASONING

Big Question How can I best convince someone to believe me? Claim: I should play more video games instead of doing homework. Reasoning: Video games sharpen my reflexes and multi- tasking skills, causing my brain to create more neural connections which will help me focus in class. Evidence

Take out “5 characteristics of Life notes” to be stamped

Work Time Playlist Complete Fire CER (due tomorrow) Read “Is the Fetus Alive?” article and be prepared to discuss in class

4- Advanced 3- Proficient 2- Basic 1- Below Basic 0- Incomplete Is Fire Alive? CER Practice Quiz

0 (Incomplete) You didn’t do the assignment. Please do it or this boy and Ms. Lee will be upset and cry. You don’t want to see us cry.

1 (Below Basic) You attempted the assignment, but are missing either a CLAIM, EVIDENCE, or REASONING. You have a C, E and R, but they do not relate to each other or your argument does not make sense.

2 (Basic) You have a CLAIM. (Fire is alive, or fire is not alive) You have at least 1 piece of EVIDENCE. You conclude your argument with REASONING (“Because of evidence, I think fire is alive”) Your C, E, and R are related.

3 (Proficient) You have a CLAIM. (Fire is abiotic, or fire is biotic) You have multiple pieces of EVIDENCE. You conclude your argument with REASONING Your C, E, and R are related.

4 (Advanced) You have a CLAIM. (Fire is alive, or fire is not alive) You have multiple pieces of EVIDENCE, explain the evidence in detail based on your observations, and acknowledge the other point of view. You conclude your argument with REASONING Your C, E, and R are related.

CER take-home quiz Pick an article to read: Clouds or Computer Viruses Use the article to decide if clouds or computer viruses are alive, and your notes about the 5 characteristics of life. Write a CER in the box provided. Due Friday August 29
