Hot wire anemometer Laser Doppler anemometer Particle image velocimetry
3
1 Hot wire anemometer Classification Single sensor probe
Dual sensor probe Triple sensor probe
4
Advantages: Good frequency response Wide velocity range Output is continuous Limitations: Probe blockage Used for only clean gas Needs to be recalibrated frequently
5
2. Laser Doppler anemometer
Measures velocity using laser light The objects may be microscopic particle in a fluid, solid surface Velocity of object is obtained by measuring the change in wavelength of the reflected light
6
Advantages and limitations:
Non contact flow measurement technique Direct way of measuring local velocity Very high frequency response Ideal for real time flow measurement
7
3. Particle image velocimetry
Non intrusive full field optical measuring technique for fluid motion velocity The fluid of interest is seeded with tracer particle illuminated by a sheet of bright light The positions of these particles at different times are recorded on a camera Then, by measuring the particle displacement, the motion of fluid can be measured
8
Applications: Aerodynamics Hydrodynamics Internal combustion engines Reactive flow Mixing flow Spray formation
9
Advantages and limitations
Non intrusive Negligible distortion of the fluid flow Avoids the need for intrusive flow measurement probe Capable of measuring an entire two dimensional cross section
