Chapter 4- Part II Organization of Periodic Table Periods Horizontal rows that run left and right Numbered 1  7 Period # = number of energy levels (shells)

Groups (families) Vertical columns that run up and down 18 groups Group # = electrons in last shell (valance) Same group/family = similar properties (characteristics)

Alkali (metals) family Group #1 (Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Fr) Not H 1 electron in outer shell Characteristics include: reactive (blow up), shiny, meallable (shape with hammer), ductile (conduct electricity) Brainiac: Alkali Metals

Be Careful With The Bottom Left!

What are they found in? YouTube - Sodium in Water YouTube - Sodium in Water

Alkaline (metals) family Group #2 (Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Ra) Sometimes called rare earth metals 2 electrons in outer level Same characteristics of alkali family (not as dangerous)

What are they found in?

Transition Metals Groups 3-12 (# of electrons in outside shell changes) Many different characteristics

Examples of Transition Metals YouTube - Alice in Wonderland: Tea Party

Boron Family Group 13 (B, Al, Ga, In, Tl) 3 electrons in outside shell Aluminum is the most abundant metal on earth Found in:

Carbon Family Group 14 (C, Si, Ge, Sn, Pb) Contain 4 electrons in outer shell Found in:

Nitrogen Family Group 15 (N, P, As, Sb, Bi) Five electrons in outer shell Found in:

Oxygen Family Group 16 (O, S, Se, Te, Po) Six electrons in outer shell Found in:

Halogens Group 17 (F, Cl, Br, I, At) Seven electrons in outer shell Reactive Found in:

Noble Gases Group 18 (He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe, Rn) Outer Level FULL Don’t react with anything Examples include:

Hydrogen Group Group 1 (only H- Separated from others ) One electron in outer shell VERY Reactive (does not share any other characteristics with group 1 elements) YouTube - Hindenburg disaster

Physical vs Chemical Properties 1.Physical Color Size Shape Texture (rough, smooth) Magnetic Luster (shinny) 2.Chemical Flammable (burn) Rust Souring (milk spoils)

Physical & Chemical Changes 1. Physical Looks different but is the same thing (cut something) Phase changes (S  L  G) Can reverse or change back easily 2. Chemical Makes something NEW (Iron turns into rust) Makes COMPOUNDS Cannot reverse or change back easily

Do These Pictures Show Physical or Chemical Differences?

Chemical Properties Fe + O 2 Fe 2 O 3

Metal vs. Nonmetals vs. Metalloids

Synthetic (man made) vs. Natural Usually, any element above atomic # 92 is man made Chemical symbol sometimes looks different; element symbols are outlined Shoot 2 elements together and combine them YouTube - They Might Be Giants: "Meet the Elements" (BB Video)
