PWCS World Language K-12 Curriculum Mission The PWCS World Languages mission is to provide world-class, rigorous, and engaging instruction that prepares all students to be responsible global citizens. The PWCS World Languages Program will create life-long learners who develop and maintain proficiency in more than one language.

Course content & objectives: Spanish III focuses on comprehension of the language in formal and informal situations as well as speaking, reading, and writing correctly and appropriately in various situations. We will also develop an appreciation for the value of language study for personal and professional growth and an awareness of different cultures. Spanish Pre AP-III This class will have the same focus, themes and skills as Spanish III. The main difference lays on the fact that we will be moving at a faster pace, with more rigor and higher expectations.

General outline: First quarter: review and Capítulo 1 Second quarter: Capítulos 2-3 Third quarter: Capítulos 3-4 Fourth quarter: Capítulos 5-6 This outline is based on PWCS guidelines, and could be slightly adjusted to accommodate students ready to move at a faster pace or those who need extra help.

How will my child be assessed? PWCS WL uses mostly performance-based assessments for summative or unit and semester exams. Students are assessed in the same way they learn the language…. through application of the vocabulary and grammar in real-life situations in the new language.

Grading: Grades fall into the following categories: 1) Oral & Written Performance Activities 2) Quizzes 3) Class participation/Classwork 4) Homework 5) Reading, writing, listening and speaking assignments 6) Benchmarks 7) Final Exam 10%

Attendance and make-up work: I follow Prince William County Public Schools and Hylton High School policy regarding tardiness and attendance. It is your responsibility to request make-up work. Late work is not accepted. Missed performance, quizzes, and other assignments must be made up within one week.

Extra help/Extra credit: I am available for extra help; please make an appointment to see me during the day (if we can find a time we are both free) or after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Don’t wait if you are confused…come see me! You can come for extra help after school to correct mistakes on quizzes and other graded assignments. I will give you extra points if you come and discuss your mistakes with me and if we correct those mistakes together. There will be opportunities to earn extra credit during the semester which I will explain periodically.

How can I help my child increase and maintain his/her proficiency ? Have your child read aloud to you in the new language Encourage them to teach you and family members their new language on a daily/weekly basis Let them watch a movie or TV show (Telenovela, international news) in the target language Let them use YouTube for authentic videos of songs and news (with caution about some content) Use internet to do virtual tours of cultural places Switch the electronic devices and applications to the target language i.e. video games, ITunes Encourage them to use phrases, new language with multi-lingual peers & neighbors Check the SchoolFusion page for specific enrichment resources posted by teacher Ensure your child completes home assignments
