3 About Mr. Leffel Starting my 16th year teaching in the School District of Menomonee Falls. 5 th year at Riverside teaching 3 rd grade. 11 years teaching at TJMS and North Middle School Coached boys basketball at MFHS for 10 years Education – Earned Bachelor's Degree in 1999 from Wisconsin Lutheran College – Hold a Wisconsin Professional Educator License to teach grades 1-8 and Speech Education for grades 1-9 – Earned Master's Degree in 2010 from National-Louis University in Interdisciplinary Studies in Curriculum and Instruction – Emphasis in Environmental Education

5 Schedule Everyday, your child will have reading, writing and math. Depending on the week, your child will also have science or social studies each day for at least 30 minutes. Monday: * Specials – Physical Education (1:30-2:00) Music (2:00-2:30) Tuesday: * Specials –Art (1:30-2:15) Wednesday: * Specials – Comp. Lab (11-12) Music (1:15-2:00) Phy. Ed.(2:00-2:30) Thursday: * Specials – Physical Education (1:30-2:00) Friday: * Specials – Library (1:30-2:30), Guidance (2:30-3:00)

6 Curriculum Tied to “I Can” Statements from the state and national common core standards Reading (Workshop Style with a balanced literacy approach) Writing – 6 Traits (Ideas, Organization, Voice, Sentence Fluency, Word Choice, Conventions Math Curriculum (“Bridges”) Parent Support – http://www.mathlearningcenter.org/support/bridges Spelling, Cursive writing, keyboarding

7 Curriculum Continued Social Studies (Comparing Communities) Science (Environmental Science, Sound & Water) Character Development: Trustworthiness, Fairness, Citizenship, Respect, Caring, Responsibility Math/Reading Intervention time (9:30-10:00 & 12:00-12:30 - Differentiated instruction in groups) Portfolios in white binders will be created to show learning throughout the school year. PDSA Cycles (Plan, Do, Study, Act)

8 The Class Mission Statement The Tar Heels of Room 217, through a united effort, are committed to set and accomplish our goals, work hard, do our best, have fun, and get better every day, while being respectful, responsible, and safe, in order to make a positive impact on others, causing learning to take place for EVERYBODY, so we are prepared for the future.

9 Class Learning Goal #1 By the end of the 2015-2016 school year, 100% of Mr. Leffel’s students will meet their learning target goal on the MAP test in math and reading.

10 Class Learning Goal #2 By the end of the 2015-2016 school year, 100% of Mr. Leffel’s students will improve by 4 reading levels or be reading at an O, P, Q or higher.

11 Class Rules Be Respectful Be Responsible Be Safe “THE RIVERSIDE WAY!”

12 Discipline Pride Points Incentive for class. – Positive or negative rolls where the goal is 20 points. – Earn various incentives for a reward “A” Bucks – Classroom Money – Handed out for being caught doing something respectful, responsible or safe in class. – Uses: Get a new worksheet, Get a drink, Bathroom pass, etc. Save the “A Bucks” for an auction at the end of the year.

13 Incentives Continued Student of the Week – Everybody will be SOTW once this year – Handout reminder and bulletin board Student of the Month Nominations Character in Action Award Nominations

14 Student Responsibilities Bring a healthy snack or water bottle Do homework everyday – Fill out assignment notebook completely daily – Get assignment notebook signed by a parent nightly – (Math) Home Connections or Flash Cards – (Spelling) Study words for Friday’s Test – (Reading) 15 minutes of reading & Reading Log (2x/week)
