4. Cell phones are involved in 1.6 million auto crashes each year that cause a half million injuries and take 6,000 lives. (USDOT) Individuals who drive while sending or reading text messages are 23 times more likely to be involved in a car crash than drivers who do not text and drive. 5. A crash typically happens within an average of three seconds after a driver is distracted. (USDOT) Five seconds is the average time a driver’s eyes are off the road while texting. The study is first of its kind; first to compare voice-to-text and manual texting on a handheld device in an actual driving environment. 10. Michigan’s Anti-Texting Law (257.602b) All Michigan drivers are prohibited from texting while driving. A driver shall not “read, manually type, or send a text message on a wireless 2-way communication device that is located in the person's hand or in the person's lap…, while operating a motor vehicle that is moving on a highway or street in this state.” The exceptions include drivers who: –Report a traffic accident, medical emergency, or serious road hazard. –Report a situation in which the person believes his or her personal safety is in jeopardy. –Report or avert the perpetration or potential perpetration of a criminal act against the individual or another person. –Carry out official duties as a police officer, law enforcement official, member of a paid or volunteer fire department, or operator of an emergency vehicle.
