Hobbs Professor of Cognition and Education at Harvard University Adjunct Professor of Psychology at Harvard University Senior Director of Harvard Project Zero Originated the Theory of Multiple Intelligences
4
Theory of Multiple Intelligences Eight criteria or “signs” of an intelligence: 1.Potential isolation by brain damage. 2.The existence of idiots savants, prodigies and other exceptional individuals. 3.An identifiable core operation or set of operations. 4.A distinctive development history, along with a definable set of 'end-state' performances.
5
Theory of Multiple Intelligences Eight criteria or “signs” of an intelligence: 5.An evolutionary history and evolutionary plausibility. 6.Support from experimental psychological tasks. 7.Support from psychometric findings. 8.Susceptibility to encoding in a symbol system.
6
Theory of Multiple Intelligences Eight abilities meet the criteria: 1.Spatial Intelligence 2.Linguistic Intelligence 3.Logical-mathematical Intelligence 4.Bodily-kinesthetic Intelligence 5.Musical Intelligence 6.Interpersonal Intelligence 7.Intrapersonal Intelligence 8.Naturalistic Intelligence
7
Spatial Intelligence Spatial Intelligence involves the potential to identify and utilize the patterns of broad space and more confined areas.
8
Linguistic Intelligence Linguistic Intelligence involves sensitivity to oral and written language, the ability to learn languages, and the capacity to utilize language to achieve certain goals. This intelligence includes the ability to effectively utilize language to express oneself rhetorically or poetically; and language as a means to remember information. Writers, poets, attorneys and speakers are among those that Gardner sees as having high linguistic intelligence.
9
Logical-mathematical Intelligence Logical-mathematical Intelligence consists of the ability to analyze problems logically, carry out mathematical operations, and investigate issues scientifically. In Gardner's words, it includes the ability to find patterns, deductive reasoning, and logical thinking. This intelligence is most often associated with scientific and mathematical thinking.
10
Bodily-kinesthetic Intelligence Bodily-kinesthetic Intelligence involves the ability of using one's entire body or parts of the body to solve problems. It is the ability to use mental abilities to coordinate bodily movements. Gardner sees mental and physical activity as related.
11
Musical Intelligence Musical Intelligence involves skill in the performance, composition, and appreciation of musical patterns. It consists of the ability to identify and compose musical pitches, tones, and rhythms. According to Gardner musical intelligence runs parallel to linguistic intelligence.
12
Interpersonal Intelligence Interpersonal Intelligence is the ability to understand the intentions, motivations and desires of other people. It allows people to work effectively with others. Educators, salespeople, religious and political leaders and counselors all need a well-developed interpersonal intelligence.
13
Intrapersonal Intelligence Intrapersonal Intelligence is the ability to understand oneself, to appreciate one's feelings, fears and motivations. In Gardner's view it involves having an effective working model of ourselves, and to be able to use such information to regulate our lives.
14
Naturalistic Intelligence Naturalistic Intelligence is the ability to be in sync with nature. Interest in exploring and learning about the environment characterizes those possessing this intelligence.
