Cannabis Fact file

Fact 1 The most popular illegal drug in the UK.

Fact 2 There are many different types and strengths.

Fact 3 It has many different names eg. draw, dope, skunk, grass, smoke, spliff, bush, blow, weed, joint and many others

Fact 4 Usually smoked on its own or with tobacco. Sometimes baked into cakes.

Fact 5 You can’t fatally overdose or get physically dependent on it, but…..

Fact 6 …. it can mess up your concentration, make you forgetful, and slow down your reactions. It can make you giggly and heighten your awareness of sound and colour.

Fact 7 It usually relaxes you, but it can make you feel anxious or paranoid. In extreme cases it can make you psychotic, which is very dangerous and usually results in the person being placed in a psychiatric unit.

Fact 8 Some people smoke it so much to feel ok they get into a habit so they think they can’t do without it! It kills ambition and makes people lazy and boring.

Fact 9 Cannabis has a higher concentration of ‘nasties’ (tar etc) than cigarette smoke, causing possible damage to lungs.

Fact 10 Some people use it for medical reasons, e.g. multiple-sclerosis, glaucoma, arthritis, pain relief, but they are prescribed it by a doctor and it comes as a pill.

Fact 11 It is illegal to have it, give away or sell it. It is illegal to pass a cannabis cigarette (joint) to someone else If you are caught growing it, giving it away or selling it you will be treated more harshly than someone who is just using it. A criminal record for drugs can prevent you from doing many jobs and can even prevent you from visiting various countries, such as the USA.

Your task Make a mind map about cannabis using the facts from this power-point Your brain-frame should have the following headings: - different names for cannabis - the effects of cannabis - what the law says about cannabis - how it is used You mind map should include accurate information and be well presented using pictures/drawings and colour. You have nearly two lessons to complete this task The best ones will receive golden tickets!
