List the goals of Healthy People 2020. What is the Health continuum & what information does it provide?

Research an article discussing technology in America. Make a connection between technology and the health of individuals. After reading the article, make a claim, state evidence and a warrant.

When someone asks you “How are you?” What is your usual response. Is your response always true to how you feel? What aspects comprise (make up) your health? Health is dynamic ◦ Constant change in how you feel Can be the top performer on team on Monday & have the flue on Wednesday. ◦ Health continuum spans chronic disease (cancer) to high level of health. Changes in continuum can be sudden (acute) such as a broken arm, or gradual (chronic) such as constant stress.

Decisions you make every day affect your health. ◦ What you choose to wear, eat & do. ◦ Not wearing safety goggles when working w/ power tools, you can damage your eye. Lifestyle factors ◦ Help determine one’s level of health. ◦ Certain factors linked to diseases, i.e. smoking & lung cancer. ◦ 8-10 hours of sleep each night & regular sleep wake cycle. ◦ Breakfast each day. ◦ Variety of nutritious foods. ◦ Being physically active @ least 20 minutes a day. ◦ Maintaining healthy weight. ◦ Avoid tobacco & other drugs. ◦ Managing stress. ◦ Abstaining from premarital sex.

Two main goals… ◦ Increase quality of life & years of healthy life for all Americans. ◦ Remove health differences that result from factors such as gender, race, education, disability & location. Studies have shown that when people are more educated, the general health of population improves. ◦ Think of education level in 3 rd world nations & overall health.

Composed of 3 aspects ◦ Physical health How well your body functions. Enough energy to perform activities of daily life, to cope w/ everyday challenges & stresses, to resist diseases & to avoid injury. Adequate sleep & rest, eating nutritious meals, drink enough water & being physically active on regular basis. ◦ Mental/emotional health Feelings about yourself, how well you meet the demands of daily life & ability to process info. Enjoy challenges, like learning new things & see mistakes as opportunities to grow & change. Accept responsibility for actions & stand up for beliefs & values. ◦ Social health The way you get along w/ others, ability to make & keep friends & work & play in cooperative ways.

Keeping a balance ◦ Each side similar to legs on a tripod. If one leg is shorter than other two, tripod will tilt or fall. ◦ Unbalanced health triangle likely to cause problems @ some point. ◦ When you work to keep your physical, mental/emotional & social health in balance you are more likely to function @ highest level. Imagine the story of your health up to today were made into a movie. ◦ What situations & people affected your health @ each stage of your life? ◦ How have influences on your health changed through the years? ◦ How do early influences still affect you today? ◦ Be sure to address all three sides of your health triangle; physical, mental/emotional and social.

Heredity ◦ Physical traits such as eye & hair color & height. ◦ Specific genes may put you @ risk for certain illnesses, i.e. diabetes. Physical environment ◦ Living in a safe environment leads to good physical & mental/emotional health. Living in area w/ high crime rate may lead to stress or concern for personal safety. ◦ Air pollution, pollen, dust, smog or living w/ a smoker. Social environment ◦ Supportive social environment can lead to positive values, commitment to learning & confidence in future success. Culture ◦ Gives a sense of identity & helps you know yourself better & become tolerant of others.

Attitude ◦ Way you view situations. ◦ To practice good health habits, you must believe there is some benefit to you. ◦ Studies have shown that people who see the positive in situations are more likely to have better health than those who see the negative. Behavior ◦ Mastering new skills gives sense of accomplishment & enhances self-esteem. ◦ Learning how to resolves conflicts positively influences relationships.

Media ◦ Shapes public opinion. ◦ Advances in info delivery systems (Internet) allows thousands to access info. ◦ Not all messages reliable. May be exaggerated to persuade buyers. Technology ◦ Advances in medical screenings & treatment for diseases, i.e. heart disease, cancer & AIDS, help people live longer, healthier lives. ◦ Technology has replaced many physical activities. Drive instead of walk, watch TV, work on computer or play video games instead of being physically active.

Risk behaviors: Actions that can potentially threaten your health and wellness. Cumulative risks: Related risks that increase in effect with each added risk. Abstinence: Avoiding harmful behaviors including the use of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs and sexual activity before marriage.
