Biomedical Research Advances THAT BENEFIT ANIMALS
2
Benefits Artificial joints for dogs with hip displacements Cancer treatments Feline leukemia research Genetic research in inherited diseases Heart disease treatment Nutrition for pet food Orthopedic surgery & therapy for horses Tooth & gum disease research Vaccines & antibiotics
3
Health Problems shared by humans &animals Ex; allergies, anemia, arthritis, asthma, cancer, cataracts, deafness, diabetes, epilepsy, glaucoma, heart disease, hemophilia, hepatitis, High blood pressure, infertility, Flu, Kidney disease, leukemia, Lyme disease, rabies, eczema, tetanus, tooth/ gum disease, TB, ulcers, vitamin deficiency
4
Advancing animal health The contribution that animals have made to medical research is being repaid by new advances used by veterinarians to save our pets lives, enhance the lives of farm animals and preserve a future for our wildlife.
5
Animal research Medications developed to kill parasites like heartworms Vaccines such as feline leukemia, rabies, distemper &infectious hepatitis. Fortified foods for nutrition and to avoid amino acid deficiency in cats. Embryo transfer techniques to improve breeding. To avoid genetic problems such as hip dysplasia, deafness and hemophilia. 2005 Pacemakers used in dogs and cats
6
Livestock Before vaccines a farmer would have to destroy both healthy and infected stock to contain disease. Now drugs and vaccines safeguard the animals we raise and consume.
7
Wildlife At one point we feared losing the bald eagle, alligator and red wolf. Conservation and captive breeding programs made it possible for these animals to be reintroduced into the wild. Today their numbers are growing. Researchers rely on the latest research in: -reproduction -nutrition -toxicology -medicine to build a future for our wild animals
