11 out of 15 surveyed stated that they felt that the instances of incivility in the workplace has risen increasingly over the course of a year. 9 out of the 15 surveyed were unhappy in their work environment because of the increase of uncivil behavior. When asked how important it is to work in a civil environment, 100% of the respondents stated that it is “Very Important” to them. When asked what were some of the uncivil behaviors encountered in the unit, these were the most frequently mentioned problems: * Gossip or down putting another co-worker * Taking, without permission, a co-workers food from the refrigerator * Not helping out another co-worker when having downtime *Sexual harassment (inappropriate behaviors/conversations) * Lack of effective communication

Greeting one another with a smile or saying hello. Respecting one’s personal space Cleaning up after one’s self Being courteous Being nice Being a team player Not gossiping Not using foul or abusive language when speaking to one another Speaking more positively “if you have to criticize, make it constructive, not hurtful!” The golden rules, saying please and thank you. To find a humble way to resolve any issue.

“Whatever civility might be, it has to do with courtesy, politeness, and good manners” (Forni, 2002) "Empowered by faith, consistently, prayerfully, we need to find our way back to civility. That begins with stepping out of our comfort zones in an effort to bridge divisions... Civility also requires relearning how to disagree without being disagreeable; understanding, as President [Kennedy] said, that "civility is not a sign of weakness." - President Barack Obama, The National Prayer Breakfast, Feb. 4, 2010

The unit “RULES” once finalized and agreed upon are placed here. There will also be a contract that all members will agree to sign stating that they will adhere to the rules. New hires will received the same contract in their new hire folders so that they can adhere to the conditions that all of the unit has agreed upon to be “acceptable” work place etiquette.

We actually have a book club that a majority of the staff participates in. I have suggested “Choosing Civility” as the book for the month of July. After the book is read, we will have an open discussion about the book, and how we can implement some of the things that were learned.

GO Words of appreciation, encouraging words, words of praise, words of wisdom, sympathy words. SLOW Stop and think of about your words before saying them, could be words of disagreement, but in a manner in which everyone is respectful WHOA The golden rule of words, If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all!

Most felt that posting the unit rules were a good idea. Still a work in progress with implementation of the rules, management is sometimes slow in implementing things, and must be constantly reminded of what the plan of action is The GO words, SLOW words, and WHOA words caught on pretty quickly. People like pointing out the “WHOA” words of others, but it does raise awareness of what is coming out of one’s mouth. A few people have already purchased their books for July, so I feel that the participation will be positive.
