ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use MPCC Project Ground Overview Peter Wellings, ESA/HSO-ICG 22 January 2015

MPCC Project Ground Overview | Peter Wellings | HSO-ICG | 22 January 2015 | Slide 2 ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use The Concept 1.The Multi-Purpose Computer and Communications (MPCC) Project has two primary goals: a.Phase 1 (2015): Enable Internet Protocol (ip) communications via Ku-Band (“Ku-Forward”) to European experimenters in Columbus b.Phase 2 (2017): Control the Columbus Ka-Band Terminal and manage communications via European Data Relay System (EDRS) 2.MPCC Phase 1 is supported by NASA CR 14031 and includes: a.JSL on-board reconfiguration to introduce new ESA VLAN 95 b.Columbus LAN reconfiguration to support VLAN 95 c.New ESA ground infrastructure interfacing with the JSL via the HOSC  Simple “Class-3” payloads using LAN, power and air cooling only  PI connects via IGS-connected site (e.g. a USOC) or via the Internet  MPCC Ground Node (GN) aggregates user traffic in Europe and connects with HOSC ePVT/HPEG services via a single ESA login To be established in the COL-PDC virtual environment in Col-CC Supports HOSC preference for ESA to appear as a single HOSC user

MPCC Project Ground Overview | Peter Wellings | HSO-ICG | 22 January 2015 | Slide 4 ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use Preliminary MPCC Phase 1 Testing 1.Background ground testing between Bremen and HOSC is ongoing a.Uses a test laptop in the HOSC test lab with an Airbus-supplied software load identical to the planned Demo 1 SW load 2.10 Dec 2014 ORT: First end-to-end dry run test, with ‘on-board’ test laptop on wired and wireless LANs in the JSL Lab in Houston a.Only partly successful; difficulties in establishing the required configuration b.30% UDP losses observed at higher downlink data rates 3.06 Jan 2015 ORT: Repeat of 10 Dec 2014 test a.Mostly successful, giving good confidence for Jan ETE Test b.UDP packet downlink losses still observed c.Losses thought to be due to overloading of downlink path in the presence of other active JSL users

MPCC Project Ground Overview | Peter Wellings | HSO-ICG | 22 January 2015 | Slide 5 ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use MPCC Phase 1 ETE Test (15-16 Jan 2015) 1.ETE test with MPCC GN V1 (preliminary single-user version) in Bremen a.Test configuration identical to earlier ORTs, but dedicated to MPCC and JSL SW Version 5.1 validation b.Prerequisite for JSL SW v5.1 uplink and transition 2.Preliminary results: a.Mostly successful, giving a warm feeling for the upcoming on-orbit Demos b.Open issues:  MPCC GN V1 does not throttle the uplink stream (ESA GS requirement): With an uplink allocation of 2 Mbps Bremen was sending a stream of 5 Mbps Airbus’s (likely unacceptable) solution: ask NASA to give ESA a larger allocation for on-orbit Demo 1  UDP downlink (very important to experimenters) experienced significant losses even after correct bandwidth allocation by MSFC: 7% at 10 Mbps 26% at 20 Mbps  Video uplink/downlink (very important to experimenters) not tested

MPCC Project Ground Overview | Peter Wellings | HSO-ICG | 22 January 2015 | Slide 6 ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use MPCC Phase 1 Further Steps 1.Mar 2015 On-Orbit Demo 1: demonstrate connectivity and performance to on-orbit laptop via both Wired and Wireless LANs 2.Apr 2015 ORT: Full GN validation in secure COL-PDC virtual environment 3.May 2015 On-Orbit Demo 2: demonstrate simultaneous multi-user connectivity via COL-PDC to two on-board laptops 4.Jun 2015 ORR: Operational readiness of MPCC Phase 1 services 5.Sep 2015 SDM: Operational use for Class-3 payloads: a.EuCPAD b.METERON experiments: HAPTICS-2, INTERACT, SUPVIS-E c.mobiPV

MPCC Project Ground Overview | Peter Wellings | HSO-ICG | 22 January 2015 | Slide 8 ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use Current Issues (most severe first) 1.Enhanced HOSC System (EHS) Build 18 (currently operational) limits each user to max 8 protocol/port combinations a.Limitation will be lifted in EHS Build 19, operational 29 Apr 2015 b.Workaround: use multiple login Roles with separate config per Role 2.HOSC cannot support Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) a.At core of Airbus MPCC Phase 2 concept; was planned for testing in on-orbit Demos b.Alternative under consideration: L2TP 3.The JSL (on ground and in orbit) only supports TCP connections from ground to space (we would like them from space to ground too) a.Under longer term discussion with NASA to find a way to lift this constraint
