AP Human Geography Options AP Human Geography Expanded for 2015 – 2016 from LTAC-only 9 th graders to over 700 incoming freshmen! 2016 – 2017 entrance cutoff (> 800) is the same. Success so far has been more closely linked not to test scores but to student motivation. Higher-level learning more application & content time management study skills (active not passive) Prerequisite knowledge Summer assignment Omega Ω Istoria Four-year humanities curriculum in which your history/social science class and English classes are linked through specifically chosen fiction and non-fiction texts in order to provide a more enriching experience. Addt’l humanities elective (less STEM) The same prerequisites as regular AP Human Geography are suggested (see left). Each year will consist of a year-long research project or paper Senior year will culminate with a required humanities-based creative project (film, play, etc.)

Getting Ready This Summer!!! Prerequisite historical knowledge Students come into Lane with diverse skills and knowledge of history. Students will achieve deeper understanding and be more comfortable in class discussions/lectures if they are familiar with an outline of basic world history coming into class. This summer there will be an assignment which we hope will give the students that background knowledge. It will be posted online, and it is required that all APHG students complete it. They will be assessed on the material during the first week of school The knowledge req’d will be survey level and not deeply analytical Geographic knowledge (included in summer assignment) Students should have basic locational knowledge of countries and regions listed in the summer assignment. Current affairs Students should engage with the world around them. They should watch the World News, read a daily newspaper or weekly magazine. I like The Week.

If interested, complete the online application and provide the writing sample by completing the essay required. A link to the Istoria Ω Omega application can also be found at www.lanetech.org/freshmen. Other concerns or questions regarding freshman year classes? Or to opt out of AP Human Geo, please contact Ms. Johnson at tecarroll@cps.edu. Please check the www.lanetech.org/freshmen website & make sure your student completes the summer assignment (posted by June 15 th ) before the beginning of next school year.
