2. Overview of the Course POGS MDG COUNTDOWN: CAPACITY ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM FOR MIDWIVES ON MATERNAL AND NEWBORN CARE a training program on Maternal and Immediate Newborn Care for Midwives, focusing on life saving skills and interventions of the Midwifery Act of 1992

3. 3 Course Goals Improve the ability of participants to manage and provide routine and emergency obstetric care services. Provide participants with knowledge, decision-making skills and other clinical skills to respond appropriately to obstetric emergencies. Provide participant with interpersonal communication skills to recognize women’s right to life, health, privacy and dignity.

4. General Objective To strengthen the basic knowledge, skills and attitude of midwives in providing the added skills of midwives under the Midwifery Law that will impact to improvement of maternal and newborn care.

5. Specific Objectives MODULE 1 Overview : Rationale for Maternal and Neonatal Care Course for Midwives To discuss the problem of maternal death and disability in the Philippines To relate the THREE DELAYS in maternal and neonatal death To present the Millennium Developments Goals (focus on MDGs 4 and 5) To identify the interventions to reduce maternal mortality and disability To name the components of Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care To discuss Midwifery Law and Midwifery Ethics

MODULE 2: ANTEPARTUM CARE To discuss the WHO model of Focused Antenatal Care  General Assessment of the Pregnant Woman  Screening for diseases that complicate pregnancy  Preventive measures  Health Education  Birth Plan To recognize complicated pregnancies for prompt referral  Pre-eclampsia and eclampsia  Vaginal bleeding during pregnancy  Prelabor rupture of membranes  Preterm Labor

7. MODULE 3: INTRAPARTUM CARE (Labor and Delivery) To differentiate latent from active labor To discuss best practices in caring for the woman in labor  Maternal position during labor  Nutrition during labor  Supportive Care/Pain relief during labor To describe and practice monitoring progress of labor using the PARTOGRAPH

Intrapartum Care 2 To discuss prevention, recognition and initial management (before referral) of Obstetric Emergencies during labor Cord Prolapse Obstructed labor Stuck shoulder To demonstrate the skills and competencies mandated in the Midwifery Act of 1992.  Repair of 1 st and 2 nd degree perineal lacerations  Internal examination during labor  Intravenous infusion during OB emergencies  Administration of oxytocin after delivery of the placenta

9. MODULE 4:POSTPART UM CARE To describe routine Postpartum Care including Postpartum Family Planning To discuss Postpartum Hemorrhage  Common causes of postpartum hemorrhage  OXYTOCIN in the prevention and management of Postpartum Hemorrhage  Initial management of postpartum hemorrhage

10. MODULE 5 Newborn Care To present the new Essential Newborn Care protocol To demonstrate Newborn Resuscitation **Principles of Good Care – to be discussed in all modules To discuss Rights of Women when receiving maternity care service To review standard precautions to prevent Infection To review proper Records keeping and Proper Referral

12. Target participants  Licensed government and private midwives. (9-12 participants per course depending on patient load of clinical training site) Duration: 7days  Didactic: 3 days  Illustrated lectures, group discussions, demonstration and return demonstration of skills using checklists  Practicum: 4 days  Actual hands on experience with patients in labor and delivery in hospital/training sites, guided by a preceptor Registration Fee

14. COURSE REQUIREMENTS: 1. Complete ATTENDANCE to all activities (didactic and practicum) 2. Caseload – Internal Examination (20) Suturing (5-10) IV Insertion (10) Partograph (3-5) CERTIFICATION A certificate of ATTENDANCE will be issued after completion of the 6 days course A certificate of TRAINING will be awarded to participants who demonstrate competence and are found to be integrating the skills acquired in her practice after post training follow-up in their respective areas of work.
