Life of St. Ignatius of Loyola  In 1521 in a battle with French forces at Pamplona, Ignatius was severely wounded.  Historically Pamplona in the 16 th century was filled with French sympathizers, and more than willing to accept the rule of then King Francis I of France  Ignatius was involved with a violent minority, and when his small militia was overrun, that was it for resistance  The French treated Ignatius with great respect after his injury, and some suggest that it was French forces that made the weeks long journey to transport him back to Loyola to recover.
