Laboratory Rules

What to bring to Lab~ 1. Notebook 2. Pencil (ONLY) 3. Backpack (if instructed)

Food and Drinks Food and drinks, including bottled water are never allowed in the Lab This includes GUM and CANDY! (AG #1)

Long hair and bulky clothing are dangerous in the lab (AG #2) –These can be drawn through chemicals – These can get caught on lab tools. –These can catch on fire. Tie back long hair, roll up sleeves.

Rings, watches, and jewelry are dangerous in the lab. –Dangling jewelry may catch on a piece of equipment and cause an accident.

LAB is NOT your like your house -DO NOT search through cabinets or stock room (AG #3,8) -DO NOT wander (AG #4) -DO NOT try your own “recipes” or experiments (AG #12) DO sit at your seat and follow all directions

Types of accidents and how to handle them:

Remain calm! A minor problem quickly becomes a major one if you don't.

Lab Safety: Everyone is Responsible! "I didn't mean to" and "It wasn't my fault" are two statements that have no place in the lab. Horse-play will not be tolerated ( , $)

Broken Glass: The most common accident in the lab, even with the best of care. –Proper use of equipment NO TROUBLE –Improper use, horseplay LOTS of TROUBLE

–If glassware is broken, stop where you are. –Report the breakage to your teacher (AG #7) –Your teacher will collect the broken glass, not you.

Chemical Spills: You are to treat all chemicals and spills as DANGEROUS (AG #6). –Stop where you are and tell the teacher. (AG #7)

Eye Wash Station: -The station should only be used if chemicals come in contact with the eyes. -Flood eyes and eyelids with water for a minimum of 15 minutes.

Safety Shower: –Use the shower provides if large amounts of chemicals are spilled or splashed onto the skin or clothing. –Remember there is no drain!!!

Fire Safety Blanket: Stop, Drop, and Roll !!!! -Use only after person stops, drops, & rolls –Use on PEOPLE

Fire Extinguisher: Don't waste it! - You must get close to the fire - as close as 5 or 6 feet! - Use on THINGS, not people –Think P-A-S-S.

P -- pull the pin A -- aim the hose at the base of the fire S -- squeeze the handle S -- sweep the hose back and forth

Electrical Safety Unplug the electrical plug from its socket by pulling on the PLUG,electrical plug not the electrical cord.

Who cleans up after each lab? –STUDENTS clean up (AG #10) –Dispose of chemicals as directed by your teacher –Rinse and dry all glassware –Put all materials back as you found them –Clean and dry your lab table –WASH YOUR HANDS (AG #9) –DRY the sinks
