Scientific Classification Objective: Classify living things by their scientific name and environmental role.

Introduction 0 Organisms are classified by their similarities and differences 0 The system shows the biological relationships and differences of organisms 0 The major divisions or stages are: 1. Kingdom 2. Phylum 3. Class 4. Order 5. Family 6. Genus 7. Species

Kingdom 0 All organisms are classified into 5 kingdoms: 0 Monera 0 Protista 0 Fungi 0 Plantae 0 Animalia

Monera (Monerans) 0 Tiny one-celled organisms 0 Prokaryotic, meaning cell lacks a nucleus 0 Examples: bacteria and blue-green algae

Protista (Protists) 0 One celled organisms 0 More advanced than monerans 0 Examples: amoeba and paramecia

Fungi (Fungi) 0 More complex than monerans and protists 0 They cannot make food on their own, but instead they absorb it from their surroundings 0 Examples: yeasts, mildew, mushrooms

Plantae (Plants) 0 Many (multi) celled organisms 0 Make their food by photosynthesis 0 Small examples: moss and duckweed 0 Large examples: trees 0 Cells have cell walls

Animalia (Animals) 0 Many multi-celled organisms 0 About a million species 0 Small examples: spiders and wasps 0 Large examples: whales and elephants 0 Unlike plants, cells do not have cells do not have cell walls 0 Food is obtained by eating plants and other animals 0 Can move about (locomotion)

Nomenclature 0 System of names for organisms 0 Assigning two names is called binomial nomenclature 0 First name=genus 0 Second name=species 0 Names written in italics, or underlined 0 Used to prevent confusion with other organisms 0 Used universally Sugar maple: Aer saccharum Blue spruce Picea picaungens Cardinal Cardinalis cardinals

Nomenclature 0 Additional classification within species 0 Some species are further divided to denote minor differences within a species 0 Variety-way to separate plants that are similar, but not identical 0 Cultivar-a specific group within a species that are different but will breed true. 0 Breed-species of animals with easily identifiable characteristics

Environmental Role Classification 0 Organisms have different roles in the environment 0 Can be classified as: 0 Producer-an organism that takes nutrients and energy from non-living sources and makes them into food 0 AKA autotrophs 0 Example: Plants 0 Consumer-an organism that feeds on producers 0 Cannot make its own food 0 AKA heterotrophs 0 Example: Animals 0 Decomposer-an organism that breaks down the bodies of dead plants and animals 0 Example: bacteria and mushrooms 0 All consumers, to some extent, are decomposers 0 Examples: buzzards, squirrels, lions

GLOGSTER!!!! 0 Create a GLOGSTER!!! 0 Choose an organism 0 Picture of organism 0 Find the classification of that organism 0 You will need the K,P,C,O,F,G,S 0 Tell me about how your organism survives 0 Where does it live? 0 What does it eat? 0 How does it move? 0 Clearly note it’s common & scientific name at the top 0 Include an interesting fact
