Full marks required you to argue that you were not surprised because either… It was early in the war and restrictions on the media introduced by DORA would not have come into full effect yet Local newspapers were not so strictly controlled by DORA and therefore it was easier for them to publish more information.

3. Question 2: How similar? You would get 6 marks for identifying that both sources were positive about the troops or the battle. You would get 7 marks for showing that Source F is only positive where as Source E admits some failures. Full marks required you to argue that they were not similar because: Source E can be trusted and Source F cannot. Source E is a local newspaper with information from soldiers letters telling the truth of what happened. Source F is government propaganda celebrating the successes of the Somme which we know are exaggerated. This has been controlled by DORA.
