Example 2: Question: An object is made of pure metal. The mass of the object is 208 g. The object displaces 20 mL of water. From what metal is the object made? Note: Since the object displaces 20 mL of water, it must have a volume of 20 mL. G: m = 208 gV = 20 mL = 20 cm 3 U: D = ? E: D = m V S: D = 208 g 20 cm 3 S:D = 10.4 g/cm 3 S:The density of the metal is 10.4 g/cm 3. Therefore the object is made of silver.

Example 3: Question: Find the volume of an aluminum spike. The mass of the spike is 40.5 grams. The density of aluminum is 2700 kg/m 3. Note: 1000 kg/m 3 = 1 g/cm 3. G: m = 40.5 g D = 2700 kg/m 3 = 2.7 g/cm 3 U: V = ? E: V = m D S: V = 40.5 g 2.7 g/cm 3 S: V = 15 cm 3 S: The volume of the aluminum spike is 15 cm 3.
