ERNIES Heterogeneous group 3 face to face meetings Monthly phone calls Continues to be active
4
Tangible outcomes Completed Projects: – TBI project – VA study – Influenza study – No beds study (pilot) – Knowledge translation suicide project
5
Immunization study 243 ED employees completed surveys
6
VA study All 6 ERNIES sites (non VA) EDs during a 2 week period in March, 2009. self report their veteran status during emergency registration. VA clinics were within 5 miles of 5 of the 6 hospitals; 3 of the 6 had VA hospitals within 5 miles. All other facilities were >30 miles from the hospital. No facility was between 5 and 30 miles. 6741 patients completed the survey in the 2 week period. The percentage of patients seen per facility that self reported veteran status ranged from 3.7% to 15.9%. All of the facilities had a clinic within 5 miles except for one, and that ED reported 8.8% of its patients noted as veterans. Close VA hospitals reported 3.7%, 6.3% and 7.5% of their patients as veterans. Distant reported 8.5%, 8.8% and 15.9% of their patients as veterans. 13% of veterans have no knowledge of their eligibility.
7
Knowledge translation suicide $1M to construct, print, distribute poster Evaluation 5 sites, controlled Poster, flyer, discussion at staff meeting 43% recalled seeing material Those that saw, better response Those with poster/not recall, better responses
8
New studies Pandemic response Health care reform impact on frequent ED users Helicopter Utilization
9
Other outcomes Increased interest in EM at Guthrie and Bassett WESTRN CTSI coalition – 7 CTSI’s on the west coast – Funded by each CTSI to do NIH grant New partners – Columbia – UNC
10
Lessons learned Enthusiasm high Research possible in ED Frequent calls necessary Generate studies from internal ideas ‘easier’ studies first Feedback results early
12
NPEP Nat’l Patient Enrollment Program Connect all CTSI’s nationally 3 missions – Recruit patients for studies Reidentify patients lost to studies – Perform health policy/public health research – Perform emergency care research
13
NPEP 53 possible sites To date 33 joined/submitted data 3.96 M visits per year (3% of all ED visits) 10,800 visits per day Each brings 1.5 visitors to ED – about 25K individuals per day
14
NPEP Organizing Conference June 5, 2011 Boston Initial Survey planned – 24 ED log Demographics, payor, cc, diagnosis, disposition – 2 hour snapshot Comorbidities Medications Imaging/labs
