The International Scientific Seminar for the 40th Anniversary of Malaria Eradication in Taiwan
2
Welcome Address Dear Colleagues, The Center for Disease Control, Department of Health Taiwan, takes great pleasure in inviting you to attend “ The International Scientific Seminar for the 40th Anniversary of Malaria Eradication in Taiwan". The topic will include: the history of maintenance of malaria eradication in Taiwan, global status of malaria, control of Anopheline, therapy of malaria, global status of vaccine development and a report on the experience of malaria prevention and offering foreign aid. The CDC has invited many experts to the seminar, which offers the opportunity for discussion and for building international cooperation in malaria research. It also aims to share Taiwan's experience of malaria control with countries still suffering from malaria. According to WHO statistics, 500 million people are infected with malaria worldwide. Malaria causes 1 to 1.3 million deaths annually, and another 2 million deaths occur as an indirect consequence of malaria. After World War II, Taiwan was assisted by WHO. In 1965, WHO declared Taiwan one of the countries where malaria had been eradicated. It was a great success achieved by Taiwan. From 1965 to 2005, there have been only sporadic cases of introduced malaria. One of the reasons is Taiwan has a good and steady public health system. So far Taiwan still has 30 to 50 imported cases annually. The cases were mainly infected in areas including Southeast Asia, Africa and West of Pacific. However, there have been Anopheles minimus living in parts of Taiwan so it is possible that introduced malaria will spread again, if any imported malaria cases enter those areas. Our department of Health still has to face multiple challenges, including the retirement of most of the experienced experts, the lack of experience in clinical diagnosis on the part of most new doctors, the increased drug-resistance of malaria parasites and fragmented communication. Our main purpose is to pass on prevention experience of malaria and to preserve our achievement in malaria eradication. Also, we truly hope that it will bring different thoughts and viewpoints to the health department. Finally, we sincerely invite you to join us in reviewing our history with pride and facing future challenges with optimism.
