Bellwork ■What does liberation mean? ■What do you think V-E Day mean? ■How do you think Hitler died?

Liberation of France ■Nazis took the city of Paris, France in June 14, 1940. ■France signed an armistice with the Nazis on June 22. ■Set up a puppet government.

Liberation of France ■August 18 th, 1944 allied forces were just outside of Paris. ■Workers strike up a resistances movement. ■Commander in charge was Dwight D. Eisenhower. –Liberate Paris –Surround Paris and come back to liberate the city.

Charles de Gaulle ■General in the French army ■Kept fighting after Paris was taken. ■Was strongly for allied forces to liberate Paris. ■Convinced Eisenhower to take Paris. –He would use his troops to take the city back even if Eisenhower did not sign off.

Liberation of France ■August 23 rd, 1944 Allied troops move in to Paris. ■Allies attacked from two sides. ■Hitler ordered that the city be defended till the last man. ■German General Dietrich von Choltitz placed explosives under landmarks around the city to destroy Paris but would not detonate.

Liberation of France ■20,000 German troops surrendered or fled. The ones that fought quickly lost. ■By the morning of August 25 th, German forces in Paris was overcome. ■German commander signed Paris over to de Gaulle. ■De Gaulle was the head of two provisional governments then served as French president.

Battle of the Bulge ■Ardennes ghost front –Inexperience soldiers ■December 16, 1944 first attack ■Germans would start normal armies. ■Biggest enemy –Weather ■German planned to go through the weak Ardennes front to get to Antwerp.

Battle of the Bulge ■George Patton would free the soldiers in Bastogne on December 26 ■Germans would capture over 7,000 allied troops. ■Allied forces recycled men.

Battle of the Bulge ■Weather cleared up; Allied forces can take the to the air. ■Germans would run out of resources; Mainly gas. ■Over 100,000 Nazi; 80,000 allies that were killed, captured, wounded. ■Battle would end January 25, 1945
