Key Findings Currently there is an uneven distribution of the dental workforce in Michigan Oral health needs are more severe in certain parts of the state Fewer Michigan residents are receiving dental care 3 out of 4 pregnant women did NOT receive oral health care during their last pregnancy Seniors, pregnant women, low-income children and other special populations are at risk for poor oral health outcomes We have an access problem 2015 Oral Health in Michigan report

One solution to improve access: Midlevel Dental Providers What are mid-level providers? They fill roles similar to physician’s assistants or nurse practitioners in medicine Scope of practice: preventive and routine restorative care Models vary by scope of practice, settings for practice and supervision requirements

Minnesota Visit Brought a diverse group to observe the model and learn about the process & impact it’s had on MN’s Oral Health Oct. 1-3, 2015 MN passed legislation creating Advanced Dental Therapy as a midlevel provider in 2009 Visited 3 sites with ADTs Had educators, dentists, ADTs, and nonprofit leaders present about impact of midlevel providers Q & A session & lessons learned
