* Take out the sheet that explains different defense mechanisms.
8
Defense mechanisms: Self-deceptive techniques for reducing stress Write these example down on that sheet with defense mechanisms and their definitions. * Denial: Refusal to acknowledge a painful or threatening reality. * Ex. “I don’t have a drinking problem!” * Repression: Excluding uncomfortable thoughts, feelings, and desires from consciousness. * Ex. Can’t remember your friend’s funeral. * Projection: Attributing one’s repressed motives, feelings, or wishes to others. * Ex. You’re really mad at a friend, but you argue with them saying they’re mad at you. * Identification: Taking on the characteristics of someone else to avoid feeling incompetent. * Ex. Wanting your parents to buy you the same kind of clothes as a girl you admire, but stating that it’s because those are the best kind of clothes.
9
* Reaction formation: Expression of exaggerated ideas and emotions that are the opposite of one’s repressed beliefs or feelings. * Ex. Saying you’re not sad when you really are. * Displacement: Shifting repressed motives and emotions from an original object to a substitute object. * Ex. When you get mad at your sister, you break your mug by throwing it against the wall. * Sublimation: Redirection repressed motives and feelings into more socially acceptable channels. * Ex. Intense rage redirected in the form of participation in sports such as boxing or football. * Regression: Reverting to childlike behavior and defenses. * Ex. You and best friend get into an argument so you stomp off into another room and pout. * Intellectualization- analyzing a situation from an emotionally detached viewpoint * Ex. diagnosed with cancer- research everything there is to know about cancer

A person does not remember getting mugged. 5. A man who gets angry at his boss, but can’t express his anger to his boss for fear of being fired. He instead comes home and starts an argument with his wife. 6. A woman who starts dating a man she really, really likes and thinks the world of is suddenly dumped by the man for no reason. She reframes the situation in her mind with, “I suspected he was a loser all along. * Reaction formation * Repression * Rationalization * Displacement * Projection * Regression
