3 Workshop Aims To gain ZeroWIN Partners agreement on: the scope and boundaries of an industrial network (for the purposes of ZeroWIN) the concepts, methods and tools for inclusion in ZeroWIN (mind map) the approach to development/implementation of the joint vision of the ZeroWIN project –includes agreeing format and timescales for Vision Conference

Definition: The Natural Step Framework is [self described as] “a proven, scientifically robust model that helps organizations move towards sustainability” [and] “helps businesses better understand and integrate environmental, social and economic considerations”.

21 Methods underpinning the approaches PROLONGATION OF PRODUCT USE ? Definition: An action or operation by which components or whole products are used for the same purpose for which they were conceived.

22 Methods underpinning the approaches END OF LIFE MANAGEMENT ? Definition: The management of all activities required, at the end-of-life phase of a product.

23 Methods underpinning the approaches DE- MATERIALIZATION ? Definition: The reduction of the amount of materials or the ‘embedded energy’ of the industrial outputs, considered as final products and waste/by-products. N.B. This concept is achieved through the implementation of other concepts/ strategies e.g. eco-design, industrial symbiosis and waste prevention.

24 Methods underpinning the approaches RE- MANUFACTURING ? Definition: The process of returning a used product to at least OEM original performance specification from the customers’ perspective and giving the resultant product a warranty that is at least equal to that of a newly manufactured equivalent. [OEM is Original Equipment Manufacturer]

25 Methods underpinning the approaches GREEN CHEMISTRY ? Definition: The design, development, and implementation of chemical products and processes to reduce or eliminate the use and generation of substances hazardous to human health and the environment.

26 Quantification/Assessment/ Monitoring tools INDUSTRIAL METABOLISM ? Definition: The whole integrated collection of physical processes that convert raw materials and energy, plus labour, into finished products and wastes in a (more or less) steady-state condition.

27 Quantification/Assessment/ Monitoring tools FULL COST ACCOUNTING ? Definition: A systematic approach for identifying, summing, and reporting the actual costs of (solid) waste management. It takes into account past and future outlays, overhead (oversight and support services) costs, and operating costs.

28 Quantification/Assessment/ Monitoring tools FACTOR 4 / 10 / X ? Definitions: Factor 4 is the idea that global utilization of natural resources should be halved and social welfare doubled in order to achieve global sustainability. Factor 10 is the strategic economic goal of approaching sustainability by increasing the overall resource productivity tenfold on the average in industrialised countries. Factor X is both a measure of improvements in the eco-efficiency of a product or service, and an indication that there is unavoidable uncertainty in individual cases regarding how far de-materialisation can go.

29 General principles SOCIAL ENTERPRISE ? Definition: A social enterprise is a business with primarily social objectives whose surpluses are principally reinvested for that purpose in the business or in the community, rather than being driven by the need to maximise profit for shareholders and owners.

30 General principles SOCIAL NETWORKS ? Definition: Network Science is "the study of network representations of physical, biological, and social phenomena leading to predictive models of these phenomena“.

31 General principles PRECAUTIONARY PRINCIPLE ? Definition: Where there are threats of serious or irreversible damage, lack of full scientific certainty shall not be used as a reason for postponing cost-effective measures to prevent environmental or human/animal/plant health degradation.

32 General principles PROXIMITY PRINCIPLE ? Definition: The principle that waste should be managed as near as practicable to its place of origin.
