Today’s Activities Each group is going to be given a task to complete in order for you to learn about what was happening to the Russian people during Stalin’s reign. You guys are the people; I am Stalin. Please watch each group. Listen to the directions they receive and then watch how they complete each task. Once each table has completed their task, we will discuss the events that go with each example – what was it officially called during the Russian Revolution.

5-year plan (Tables 1, 2, 3) Stalin wanted to industrialize Russia (good idea) There were 3 five-year plans to make that happen (still good idea) First 5-year plan – prosperous, supplies and conditions were great (success) Second 5-year plan – produce more, but did not have the support needed (not a great idea) Third 5-year plan – produce even more, lie about how the country is truly doing, not allowed full 5 years (no success)

Peasant Revolts (Table 4) At first, farmers were asked to give parts of their crops to the government. All were okay with this as it was good for the community – met communist ideas. Then, more and more of their crops were taken. They realized that there was no longer a way for them to live off what they could keep. Finally, farmers had enough of demands. They rebelled by destroying the grain they didn’t need so the government received nothing. Many farmers were put in prison camps or killed for these actions.

Moscow Purge Trials (Table 5) In order to gain control of the people, Stalin needed to scare them straight. With the help from his secret police, he forced false confessions (the police threatened to harm the families of those who did not confess). His hope was that the people would see that those who go against Stalin would be severely punished.

Today’s reading of Animal Farm After you finish the quiz and place it in the basket, grab a book and a worksheet. Please read Chapters 7-8 on your own (pgs 73-109), answering the questions on the worksheet and also noticing how today’s activities line up to what is happening in these chapters. If you do not finish, you can find the chapters on my website.
